GENERAL SUMMARY: A worker who welds together heavy structural metal components as specified by blueprints, work orders, or oral instructions under direct supervision.


DESIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR SKILLS:

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Valid drivers license
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic shop mathematics
  • Experience in heavy structural fabrication
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings and welding symbols
  • Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment
  • 1-2 years welding experience with some flux core welding (FCAW)
  • Must pass welding test as part of the application process


DUTIES:

  • Perform welding tasks as directed under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
  • Identify and adhere to the appropriate Weld Procedure for the task at hand.
  • Provide quality welds that meet specifications and approval of the Quality Control Inspector and Production Manager. This includes, but is not limited to, proper weld size, weld profile, cleaning, preheating, ect.
  • Complete any relevant specific job duties as required by immediate supervision
  • Confirm temporary bracing is installed as needed to avoid distortion and remove bracing when complete.
  • Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and other basic equipment & hand tools.
  • Move and/or organize material as needed to support production tasks.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workstation.


SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricators, Inc. Safety Rules, Policies, and Procedures
    • Maintain orderly and clean work area
    • Attend all required safety meetings
  • Inspect the welding equipment each day to ensure it meets safety standards with special attention to welding leads
  • Must inspect tools daily before each use, to include extension cords
  • Use hand and power tools safely at all times with correct guards in place
  • Wear personal protective equipment in accordance with policy and adequate for specific tasks
  • Welding - Wear specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),including but not limited to:
    • Welders helmet with appropriately shaded filter lens, with safety glasses under helmet
    • Fire/flame resistant clothing
    • Heavy flame resistant gloves
    • Respirators when welding harmful metals or when ventilation is not adequate
    • Steel/hard toe boots
    • Hearing protection
  • Cutting steel with torch:
    • Wear either properly shaded safety glasses with a face shield or cutting goggles, hearing protection, steel/hard toe boots, gloves, and fire/flame resistant clothing
    • Use proper friction lighters or other approved devices to light the torch


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

In order to do the job, the following physical requirements are necessary:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift tools, equipment or materials 50 lbs. or less
  • Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching
  • Ability to frequently handle (hold, seize, grasp, turn, etc.) tools, equipment, or material
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, to include cold, heat, and humidity

Welder Classifications


GENERAL SUMMARY:
Southlands welders are classified according to the knowledge, skill level, and productivity.


Class A:


A Class A Welder the has highest level of knowledge, skill and productivity. He/she is capable of welding all types of joints encountered at Southland. This includes, but is not limited to, back-gouging, multi-pass fillet welds and CJP welds. Class A welders will frequently be certified in other types of welding (i.e., SMAW, vertical, overhead) beyond Southlands standard entry test. Furthermore, Class A Welders will often function as trainers & leaders for entry level personnel.


Class B:


Class B welders must maintain high levels of production with minimal errors or NCRs. They shall be capable of multi-pass fillet welds, PJP, back-gouging and occasional UT welds. Class B work will typically contain columns with heavy plates & complex joints.


Class C:


Class C welders are entry level welders. This classification will be issued upon passing Southlands entry level weld test. Class C welders must be capable of maintaining reasonable production with minimal NCRs. Typical work includes single & multi-pass fillet welds on beams & simple columns.
