Performs intermediate skilled trades work installing, maintaining, fabricating, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on all industrial equipment including, but not limited to pumps, motors, valves, gear reducers, and piping, checking equipment and making equipment modifications and improvements to ensure correct operation, or related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

Examples of Duties

  • Makes tours of plant and ensures all mechanical equipment is operating properly; establishes maintenance schedules; adjusts, repairs, and replaces parts.
  • Maintains, repairs, and performs basic preventative maintenance on pumps, valves, gear reducers, and associated wastewater equipment at the main facility and pump stations.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs basic mechanical equipment and systems such as bearing and seal replacements, belt replacement and alignment, valve rebuilding and replacement, basic pipefitting, screw conveyors, and clarifier systems.
  • Fabricates, installs, repairs, and replaces stainless steel, ductile iron, carbon steel, and PVC pipe.
  • Installs new equipment.
  • Performs equipment layout and makes equipment modifications and improvements.
  • Checks equipment and takes steps to ensure optimization of plant effectiveness and compliance.
  • Assists operators, electricians, and instrumentation maintenance personnel with maintenance tasks to operate and maintain facilities.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in mechanical maintenance work in a wastewater treatment plant, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Obtain 20-32 hours of maintenance specific (ex. Pump repair and troubleshooting, equipment operation, etc.), City, and Safety training. A trainee may be considered. The starting salary for a trainee is $37,168.54.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of wastewater treatment equipment.
  • General knowledge of occupational and safety hazards of the work.
  • General knowledge of basic pump station operations.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools of the trade.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment in a safe manner.

Work Environment:

  • Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme noise, odors, heights, heat, dust, fumes and to hazardous materials such as oil, transmission fluid, and the like.

  • Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception and climbing
  • If job requires frequent lifting, typical weight handled: minimum: 50lbs; maximum: 75lbs
