The City of Federal Heights Victim Services Unit is accepting applications for Volunteer Victim Advocate positions. Victim advocates provide on-scene contact with victims and witnesses of violent crime, sudden death and other critical events. They provide immediate crisis intervention; individual and family support, information about the criminal justice system, support agency referral, and facilitate other immediate needs of victims.

Training begins March 2023. Free 40-hour training is provided, which covers a wide variety of topics that can be used in everyday life as well as in crises, and are all taught by professionals in the field. Learn about crisis intervention, victimization and the criminal justice system.

Victim advocates are required to take four 12-hour on-call shifts each month, including holidays, and must be able to respond within 30 minutes of dispatch contact. Volunteers must be able to be available by telephone throughout the duration of their shifts, it is preferred that advocates have a cellular device that they can utilize for their shifts as advocates are typically required to travel and may need to be re-directed while in route.

In order to participate, volunteers must:

• Be at least 21 years of age
• Be able to undergo and pass a background investigation and drug screen
• Be a holder of a valid Colorado driver’s license with a good record
• Be compassionate and non-judgmental with victims of crime
• Be able to maintain confidentiality
• Have strong interpersonal skills
• Have self-motivation
• Be able to perform under emotional and adverse conditions
• Be able to respond to a variety of different locations within 30 minutes
• Be willing to commit to at least 12 months
