Work Schedule: Monday-Friday - 8am- 5pm - 1144 S. Seneca
Participates in and supervises the traffic engineering functions of the Public Works Department including traffic studies, traffic operation recommendations, planning, location, engineering design, construction, maintenance and operations of traffic control devices.
Plans and monitors the traffic engineering program or the County
Assigns or performs traffic engineering field studies including speed studies, traffic counts and intersection studies.
Reviews and analyzes raw data from field studies
Writes engineering studies and reports; make recommendations and modifications to traffic control devices.
Recommends methods of resolving unusual and complex problems and improving materials and practices.
Interprets applicable engineering and administrative directives, policies and standards.
Recommends and participates in the planning, design and construction of roads and intersections
Supervises the preparation and reviews construction plans for traffic engineering projects including cost estimates.
Interprets design specifications.
Works with other engineering staff to produce work zone traffic control plans; designs traffic signal plans.
Reviews material and equipment submittals for use on County projects.
Maintains records of sign shop inventories.
Monitors maintenance of traffic signals by the signal electrician.
Monitors installation and maintenance of traffic control devices by the Traffic Operations crew.
Confers with consultants and contractor concerning plans, specifications and quality of work
Participates in pre-field checks, field checks and office checks to review plans and approve final plans.
Reviews and approves contractor drawings and submittals for all phases of construction.
Negotiates the relocation of utilities for construction.
Represents the County on committees dealing with traffic/transportation issues.
Creates reviews and modifies specifications for traffic signals, signs, durable pavement markings and other traffic control devices.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university. Six years progressive civil engineering experience. Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas or ability to obtain the license within 3 months of employment; Per Sedgwick County Policy, this position requires a valid US driver’s license and current proof of automobile insurance.
Preferred Qualifications: Eight years of civil engineering experience with at least two years traffic engineering focus.
