The Assistant Operations Terminal Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of a remote rail-to-truck chemical transloading and trucking operation. The primary responsibilities include supervising a team of loading personnel that safely facilitate the transloading of liquid and dry bulk hazardous and non-hazardous materials in order to satisfy customer demands.

Major Responsibilities

  • Parts & equipment inventory
  • Railcar inspections
  • Terminal maintenance
• Ensure equipment is operational; verify proper preventative maintenance, operating techniques, inventory, and cleanliness of the following equipment:
  • Pickup trucks
  • Boilers
  • Compressors
  • Air dryers
  • DI water systems
  • Pumps
  • Meters
  • Certified truck scales
  • Emergency response equipment
• Schedule & dispatch loading personnel to maximize efficiency and productivity; ensure labor compliance with applicable law
• Create, promote, and maintain a culture of safety; ensure the regular review of safety policies and SOPs with personnel. Monitor, create, and update SOPs.
• Maintain productive relationships with local railroad officials
• Incident investigation
• Train and develop personnel on department operational processes; regular review
• Assist transportation department by dispatching local drivers
• Coordinate activities with other operating departments
• Inventory management and parts procurement
• Process work orders and assign billing functions
• Ensure rail facility and operational regulatory compliance. Regulatory agencies include FRA, CPUC, OSHA, Department of Weights & Measures, and FDA

Requirements

• High School Diploma. Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain Management or similar degree preferred.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a Transportation, Distribution, or Logistics operation
• Must be able to understand mechanical processes and solve problems
• Required leadership skills include the ability to motivate and influence others, focus on teamwork, and an emphasis on continuous improvement. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Proficiency with PC software e.g. MS Word, Excel, Project is a plus for this position. Must be self-motivated with good critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills. Must be organized
• Must be able to effectively meet with and communicate with customers, vendors, and employees
• Able to direct and give assignments to others and follow up

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift and carry hoses, fittings, and other parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds
• Must be able to climb ladders and work above ground at dangerous heights on top of railcars
• Must be able to wear, operate, and utilize personal protective equipment such as respirators
• Able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to walk, bend, reach, push, pull, stoop, squat, and climb, as necessary to perform vehicle inspections and load/unload cargo.
• Able to connect heavy 20 ft long chemical hoses underneath and on top of railcars. This often requires lifting and pulling while in an awkward body position. Able to operate valves that may be difficult to open of close.
• Able to work outdoors and tolerate extreme weather conditions such as rain, heat, or cold
• Must be able to travel overnight from time to time
• Must be available to work long hours from time to time or to work outside normal scheduled work hours, for example to respond to emergency events. Must be on call 24/7
