REPORTS TO: Camp Director at South Street Youth Center
START DATE: June 2023
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT
The South Street Youth Center is located in the Boston Housing Authority owned and operated South Street Development in Jamaica Plain. The mission of the South Street Youth Center is to provide a safe, educational, and engaging space during out-of-school time for young residents of the South Street Development. Through its broad-based programs, participants learn a happy, healthy, resilient attitude toward life that will help sustain them through adulthood.
In creating programs, the South Street Youth Center focuses on developmental outcomes for youth. Young people’s assets and interests are the basis for our programming, forming a starting point from which to broaden participants’ understanding of the world around them. We are particularly concerned with developing young people’s social and emotional skills. Research has shown that resilient youth—those with high levels of self-esteem, good conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills, and the ability to draw on support networks—are much more likely to avoid life’s pitfalls and succeed as adults.
Under the general direction of the South Street Steering Committee and the direct supervision of the Camp director, the Summer camp instructor is responsible for implementing effective, enjoyable, and educational programming with youth at the South Street Youth Center afterschool program.
