Who we’re looking for
HYPE Counseling Services is looking for a Substance Abuse Counselor in our Richmond, VA location! This position will oversee client’s treatment program as well as coordination and continuity of care.

What you’ll be doing
Including but not limited to:
- Assess the counseling needs of the client.
- Assessing client for substance abuse diagnosis using DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) criteria in determining the appropriate level of care based on ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria.
- Development of client discharge/continuum of care plan to ensure movement to the appropriate level of care.
- Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals, and follow-up in the client’s clinical record.
- Maintain client caseload (including all case management and utilization review updates). Treatment planning duties and clinical charting as required.
- Facilitate needed interventions for crisis-orientated issues utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach for assigned clients.
- Ensures all documentation is completed in a timely manner.
- Provide patients with orientation to the program regarding objectives, levels of care, expectations and requirements, hours of services, patient rights, and additional information to help patients adjust to the program.
- Ensure each client is assessed and placed at the appropriate level of care in accordance with federal and state standards as well as agency policies.
Substance Abuse Counselor Qualifications
What you need to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in required.
- CSAC certified or CSAC supervisee preferred but not required.
- General knowledge and understanding of mental illness, substance use, and developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and components of recovery.
- Knowledge of support counseling practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of the local mental health/substance use disorder local systems as well as various. services available in the community including public, private, and volunteer organizations.
- Ability to positively interact with persons with mental illness, substance use disorders and developmental disabilities, their family members, agency staff and community members.
- Ability to provide active listening, education, and assistive supports to consumers and family members.
- Good personal management skills – time management, organization, dependability, and independence.
- Ability to work as a team member with agency staff and others on behalf of recovery initiatives.
