Online Master of Music in Music Education

Longy prepares music educators to make a difference in the world. Students earning the one-year online Master of Music in Music Education (MM/ME) work closely with our faculty to become the music educators of the future. The program is uniquely designed to integrate practices of social change in the music classroom. Graduates of this program will be prepared to amplify the voices of students from all backgrounds, create and make music from diverse cultures, and approach music teaching from a holistic and equity-based perspective. In this global, online, often asynchronous program, candidates are also encouraged to pursue their own artistry and have the option to take private, online lessons with a Studio Teacher, either in their primary or secondary instrument. With students located in Asia, instruction will take place online at mutually convenient times.

The Studio Teacher position is a unique opportunity for an educator who wants to be part of this mission. We are looking for a mentor and guide who can help students discover their artistic identities as they develop the skills, artistry, and passion needed to prepare the next generation of music students.

Longy is seeking a Studio Teacher who is a leader and a coach, who sees the potential in every student. Candidates should have the skills needed to help students develop their interests and curiosity and embark on a career as a music educator. The candidate’s own career should include diverse music-making experiences and projects, as well as a deep understanding of music education in primary and secondary schools. A familiarity with Asian school systems is preferable.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide 12, hour-long online lessons (approximately one per month) to students pursuing the Online MM/ME and provide professional feedback.
  • Foster an atmosphere of inclusion and belonging in every student interaction, so that every student has equitable access and treatment.
  • Creatively incorporate the Longy mission into lessons: "to prepare musicians to make a difference in the world”
  • Offer feedback and support appropriate to students' future aspirations.
  • Take steps to raise the profile of the Longy School and its teacher education programs
  • Must be available to teach to students located in Asia whose primary language may not be English

Qualifications
A qualified candidate must possess an outstanding record as a teacher and performer and must have followed a multi-faceted career path. A degree in music or demonstrated equivalent is required. All employees of Longy must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
