Student Interfaith Engagement Fellowship
Hours Per Week: 12.5/Part-time
Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Met Council’s ten different departments are staffed by experts who helped over 305,000 clients in 2021 and continuously advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our holistic programs range from 100% affordable housing at 20 locations to our award-winning family violence program to comprehensive Holocaust survivor assistance to senior programming to crisis intervention to the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, 20 affordable housing sites, and 15 JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.
Position Summary:
The Student Interfaith Engagement Fellow will help develop programming to bring together Jewish and Muslim student organizations to learn about food insecurity and ways to improve food access among food-insecure kosher and halal-observant students. The fellow will be responsible for arranging educational events to engage students and raise awareness about the issue, gather more up-to-date information about food insecurity amongst students, and help CUNY students find culturally appropriate food that meet their needs, complementing the existing grocery assistance program currently on several campuses. This initiative will provide an opportunity to work alongside Hillels to create a platform for mutual exchange. Jewish and Muslim students will get a chance to learn about shared difficulties faced by both groups, as well as getting to know their peers and forming connections. They will be able to become more involved in raising awareness of religiously informed diets through volunteering at a Met Council fulfillment center or food pantry, and they will learn how to access food if they are in need.
Please note: This is a fellowship expected to last through June 2023 with a possibility of extension.
Principal Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement events at the Manhattan Fulfillment Center and CUNY campuses to work towards the goals of the fellowship, beginning with Baruch and Hunter College.
  • Work with our Manhattan Fulfillment Center staff to coordinate social, educational, and volunteer-based events.
  • Research and analysis
  • Work with our policy and advocacy team at Met Council to develop surveys and reports to better understand the needs of this demographic and help address the specific needs of students with religiously informed diets.
  • Support the existing grocery assistance program at Baruch and Hunter Hillels by raising awareness of the program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with halal and kashrut certifications
  • Experience in program and event planning

Skill and Education:

Compensation: $10,000 Stipend
