Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a State Airport Operations Specialist. This position is responsible for assisting the State Airport Manager with enforcing and interpreting laws, rules and regulations for the operation of airports and aircraft, and inspecting State-owned airports. The Specialist coordinates airport functions, including program development, site selection, construction, and maintenance, including the maintenance and operation of the airport, which includes facilities maintenance, air navigational aids and systems, communication systems, and weather observing systems.


This position works closely with Agency staff to provide input regarding airport development, design, and construction activities. Additionally, the Specialist will updates and prepares Airport Operation Manuals, Airport Certification Manual, Airport Security Programs, Airport Fueling Manuals, written agreements, airport regulations and directives in support of federal certification, and security, safety and airport emergency activities. This position will manage plans for airport snow removal, mowing, self-inspections, FBO training, and emergencies. This includes ensuring that emergency services for crash management, fire fighting, law enforcement, and first aid are available at airports.


This position is based in Barre, Vermont but statewide travel is required. This is a limited service position funded through 06/30/2025, with possibility of extension.

Environmental Factors

Work frequently involves travel to the various airports. Stress may be involved in negotiating and obtaining compliance with contracts. This position is based in Barre, Vermont.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in aviation management, business management, public administration, or related field AND two (2) years or more of experience in airport administration and operations that includes experience with compliance programs, airport inspections, community relations, marketing, or commercial pilot/flight instructions.
OR
Four (4) years or more of experience in airport administration and operations that includes experience with compliance programs, airport inspections, community relations, marketing, or commercial pilot/flight instructions.

Special Requirements

FAA Private Pilot Certificate with a high performance endorsement for a single engine aircraft AND a current FAA Medical Certificate are required.

Valid driver's license is required.

An Instrument Instructor rating must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
