Job description
The Software Engineer (Senior) will support sustaining engineering and operations for the Ground Systems and Mission Operations in support of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The primary role of this position as a member of the Integrated Ground System Support (IGSS) group is to provide computer system administration support to JWST IGSS systems locally at Goddard Space Flight Center, the Science Institute in Baltimore and remote systems around the country and overseas. This includes installation and configuration of systems.
Responsibilities
Troubleshoots and maintains existing IGSS software on existing I&T systems; system availability is mission critical.
Performs system integration and engineering
Integrates new software releases to upgrade existing systems
Installs latest OS patches to maintain a strong security posture
Analyzes and maintains subsystem interfaces to ensure that subsystems are integrated and work together to form a viable complete system.
Works with stakeholders to understand and resolve problems
Education:
BS degree in engineering or applied science.
Experience:
7-10 years’ experience of related experience.
Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication
Required Skills:
Strong working knowledge of Linux and Red Hat operating system is required.
Windows System Administration is a must including knowledge of SharePoint, Active Directory, and anti-virus software.
Back-up and recovery experience.
Strong experience in Windows and Linux security technologies with the ability to assess and mitigate security vulnerabilities.
Understanding of BigFix and Red Hat Satellite a plus ability to self-educate/train on the functionality of the ground system software.
Understands scripting and can apply that knowledge to understand how it is used within the IGSS software. An understanding of networking principles and implementation.
An understanding of the virtual environment and VMware a plus.
Possesses an understanding of the computer system internals, operating systems and layered products, and demonstrates an aptitude and willingness to keep technical skills current by learning new features of operating systems, hardware, tools, and technologies.

Understand how to maintain Federal Security compliance as defined by NASA (FISMA).
US Citizenship, ability to obtain National Agency Check Inquiry (NACI) background check required
Essential Requirements
Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
