This position is responsible for underwriting and servicing of both new business submissions and renewals with the emphasis on profitability. This position is also responsible for assisting and training of Underwriters.

Reports directly to the Underwriting Manager

This is both a full time and hybrid position

Job Responsibilities

  • Underwrites and grows a profitable book of business based upon eligibility by review of the HNIC Risk Appetite Guide, loss analysis, exposure analysis, class code, and reinsurance acceptability.
  • Review Due Diligence reports, Loss control surveys, loss runs, timeliness of premium payments and take appropriate action when necessary. Collaborate with specialists such as premium auditors, claims adjusters and loss control engineers for risk assessment.
  • Manages and delegates on a regular basis the activities of underwriting assistants including reaction time to compliance issues and requests from internal departments such as claims, loss control, SIU, Policy Issuance and IT as well as external requests from Agents, Brokers and Policyholders.
  • Presents accounts to management for underwriting approval accompanied by the appropriate underwriting data and recommendations.
  • Stays current with rules and regulations, market conditions and corporate underwriting disciplines utilizing NCCI and State Insurance Department websites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates accuracy, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Works effectively in a fast-paced environment while providing a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as accept direction on given assignments.
  • Will be able to establish business opportunities with brokers and clients by understanding their problems and needs and offering viable solutions which are consistent with the companies objectives.
  • The position requires a development of a service plan and efficient management of accounts.

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial insurance experience with at least 2 years of Workers’ Compensation underwriting individual accounts.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet software.
