ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Understand, and actively represent / promote the beliefs and priorities of the Appleton Park & Recreation Department youth sports program (skill development, sportsmanship & lifelong enjoyment of the game).
- Interpret and enforce National Federation basketball game rules along with local Appleton Park & Recreation Department league rule modifications.
- Supervise and control the general conduct of all participants.
- Identify violations of game rules and impose the appropriate penalties.
- Make decisions on situations or occurrences not specifically addressed in said rules.
- Maintain a positive environment using encouraging means when interacting with coaches, participants and spectators.
- Instruct players in regard to the rules and structure of basketball
- Submit all necessary paperwork (game results, pay sheet, etc) at the conclusion of shift.
- Knowledge and understanding of the rules of basketball.
- Ability to execute common officiating skills and techniques.
- Ability to positively supervise and control the game "atmosphere".
- Ability to identify "teachable moments" and integrate instruction into the management of the game.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, courteous, working relationships with coworkers, coaches and the public.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure.
- Wear proper officiating attire per the National Federation basketball rules and the Appleton Park & Recreation Department league dress requirements.
- Ability to keep accurate records and complete necessary paperwork.
- Adhere to City of Appleton and Appleton Park & Recreation Department policies and procedures.
APRD Youth Basketball Program will serve children in grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade, and will take place on Saturday mornings, January 8 through March 15.
Certification is helpful but not required.
Selected candidates may be hired at any one of the levels listed below, dependent on experience and ability to meet minimum requirements.
Sport Official I – $11.89/hr; Minimum requirements = must currently be a high school student.
Sport Official II - $13.90/hr; Minimum requirements = two years of basketball experience.
Sport Official III - $17.44/hr; Minimum requirements = high school graduate / GED and four years of officiating experience. Serves as a mentor to other officials, and has earned the respect of participants, coaches and the public through past work in Appleton Park & Recreation Department programs.Sport Official III (WIAA certified) - $26.20/hr; Minimum requirements = high school graduate / GED and four years of officiating experience. WIAA certified. Serves as a mentor to other officials, and has earned the respect of participants, coaches and the public through past work in Appleton Park & Recreation Department programs.
