RSP Mentor provides direct support services to students in grades 10-12 to enhance learning experience and motivate students to pursue college or vocational training and graduate successfully. RSP Mentor helps students to recognize and achieve their educational goals. They help students to examine school programs and recognize their academic strengths.

ASPIRA RSP Mentor Essential Functions:

  • Collect, organize and analyze information about students through records, tests, and interviews characteristics for educational and vocational planning
  • Provide guidance to students with educational, personal, career, social and emotional areas and make referrals as appropriate
  • Attend teacher meetings and participate in the development and delivery of Individualized Academic Educational Plans as required by the school
  • Design and provide group educational and/or vocational workshops
  • Work with college and career center coordinators in assisting students with career exploration
  • Make phone calls and home visits to parents/guardians as required
  • Compile educational, occupational, and economic information to assist students with formulating and meeting objectives
  • Conduct follow-up activities to evaluate student progress
  • Recruit students for academic year through school presentations and parent contacts
  • Order, catalog and maintain files on materials relating to job opportunities, careers, technical schools, colleges, scholarships, armed forces and other educational programs
  • Coordinate high school, college and career site visits and tours
  • Provides assistance in applying for college entrance examinations, secondary and

postsecondary admission and financial aid, if applicable

  • Advise students of scholarship opportunities
  • Maintain records, update files on students and prepare reports as required of assigned students
  • Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the central administration, parents, and representatives of resource agencies
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
  • Perform other duties as assigned

High school RSP Mentors advise students in making academic and career plans. Many help students with personal problems that interfere with their education. They help students choose classes and plan for their lives after graduation. RSP Mentors provide information about choosing and applying for colleges, training programs, financial aid, and apprenticeships. They may present career workshops to help students search and apply for jobs, write résumés, and improve interviewing skills.

Other duties include the following:

  • Use aptitude and achievement assessments to help clients evaluate their interests, skills, and abilities
  • Evaluate student’s background, education, and training to help them develop realistic goals
  • Guide students through making decisions about their careers such as choosing a new profession and the type of degree to pursue
  • Help students learn job search skills such as interviewing and networking
  • Assist students in locating and applying for jobs by teaching them strategies to find openings and how to write a résumé
  • Advise students on how to resolve problems in the workplace such as conflicts with bosses or coworkers
  • Help students select and apply for educational programs to obtain the necessary degrees, credentials, and skills

Qualifications

  • Spanish (Required)
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling or a related field
  • A minimum of two years of related experience in high schools and/or working with targeted age group
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours and weekends according to program needs
  • Ability to travel to other ASPIRA locations and other locations
  • A valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle are required
