Job description

Firmenich is seeking a Research Associate with experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, enzyme discovery, and some exposure to fermentation and analytical techniques. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on the discovery and development of novel biosynthetic approaches to produce flavor and fragrance ingredients (see J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134:18900 for a publication of the group).
Key Responsibilities:
Molecular biology & microbiological work in the context of enzyme and new small molecule discovery
Perform enzyme activity assays & analytical characterization of reaction products using LC-MS and GC-MS.
Occasionally assist fermentation scientist through lab-scale fermentations and purification of small molecule products
Work productively with molecular biologists, fermentation scientists, bioinformaticians, and analytical teams
Perform analysis of data and write technical reports.
Adhere to internal HS&E standards and policy
We Value:
Knowledge of genetic engineering using DNA assembly/cloning techniques and microbial strain modification techniques.
Experience in microbial (bacteria and yeast) metabolism and physiology.
Use of DNA/protein sequence software and databases.
Knowledge of fermenter/bioreactor operations.
Optimization of enzyme reactions and microbial growth/performance.
Analytical quantification (GC, GCMS, HPLC) and downstream purification processes.
REQUIREMENTS: B.S. degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, or in other related disciplines with 2-3 years relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in a related discipline.
