Relay/Load Management Technician

We are seeking a skilled technician to join our team! This rewarding technical position installs and maintains protective relays, substation controls, load management equipment, and station batteries, as well as tests high voltage electrical equipment, with an emphasis on relaying duties. The successful candidate will have the ability to demonstrate safe work practices while promoting a positive and professional work environment.

East River Electric is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative with a service area that covers 40,000 square miles. We deliver wholesale power to our members, which include 24 rural electric distribution cooperatives and one municipally-owned electric system in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. Our members, in turn, power the properties of the member-owners in their service territories. We believe cooperatives help build stronger communities.

This job opportunity is located at our main campus in Madison, South Dakota. Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform buildup, programming, installation, maintenance, modification to and functional testing of power system protective relays, power factor control equipment, substation controls/associated circuitry, load management equipment, station battery systems, and all ancillary equipment.
  • Perform the electrical check-out and functionality of substation equipment, control circuits, and ancillary equipment.
  • Assist with the installation, check-out and functionality testing of RTUs, SCADA, and revenue metering as needed.
  • Assist with power quality studies and testing for East River's transmission system and our members' distribution systems.
  • Assist with or perform high voltage substation switching for East River and other utilities as requested.
  • Maintain proper documentation, reports, and other records as required.

Key requirements include:

  • Associate degree in electrical construction, automation controls, substation, telecommunications or powerline with a minimum two years of related experience preferred.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Ability to work with others in a team oriented atmosphere, being an integral part of the workforce and acting responsibly in team efforts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to job performance and attention to detail, showing motivation to grow technical job skills and providing additional benefit to the Cooperative.
  • Demonstrated respect for others and a commitment to effective communication.
  • Experience and proficiency in using computer programs and Microsoft Office products.
  • Due to critical nature of this role, there is a requirement to live within 35 miles of Madison for quick response time when needed.
