This position is located in the Inspection, Compliance and Vendor Section of the Division of Radiological Health of the Bureau of Land and Waste Management. The individual will perform entry level duties associated with investigations, inspections and enforcement of x-ray facilities.

Job Duties:
  • Inspect x-ray equipment and work areas in hospitals, dental facilities, industries, academic institutions, and other x-ray facilities
  • Survey and determine possible radiation exposures to employees or the general public and make recommendations for necessary corrections
  • Prepare reports outlining findings and items of noncompliance with regulations
  • Ensure EFIS information regarding inspections is accurate and inspection documents are scanned in the electronic storage system
  • Provide information to inquiries regarding all aspects of ionizing radiation
  • Assist in collecting required fees and assist with enforcement actions involving x-ray facilities
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response, and is designated as an essential employee, subject to duty on a 24-hour basis during an emergency
  • Consult with users and vendors of sources of electronically produced radiation concerning regulation interpretation and radiation safety
  • Attend and participate in seminars, conferences, and training courses on radiological health
  • Perform other duties as assigned

A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences*, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.
  • These fields include but are not limited to branches relating to Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, etc.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills
  • Must have good mathematical skills, experience with personal computers and software, especially Microsoft Word
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, medical and industrial professionals, government officials, and the general public
  • Must have the ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports
  • Must have the ability to clearly relay inspection results, including issuances of violations, to management and facility personnel
  • Must have the ability to drive, sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must have the ability to access non-traditional work environments, climb ladders, stoop, lift, reach distances of 40 inches from the tabletop and lift/carry up to 40 pounds
  • Subject to radiological and industrial hazards
  • Subject to duty on a 24-hour basis during an emergency
  • Daily and some overnight travel is required
  • Must have a valid driver's license, 10-year driving record that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines, and the ability to drive a state vehicle
