We are looking for an outstanding 4680 Quality Leader who will play a pivotal role in setting up the Quality organization within Cell Manufacturing.
The 4680 Quality Leader joins a world-class team of engineers responsible for designing, building, launching, and operating Tesla battery cell factories, manufacturing our groundbreaking Tesla-designed 4680 battery cells at high speed.
At Tesla, quality is a highly interdisciplinary responsibility, and requires collaboration and coordination across engineering teams, global locations, and with vendors and new technologies. As Quality Leader, you are responsible for leadership of Tesla cell quality from end to end: design through Tesla scale mass production, and data-driven feedback loops between fleet, factory, and design. In this leadership role, you own driving the scope, schedule, implementation and budget; vendor relationships; stakeholder management and executive reporting.
This role calls for someone with strong knowledge of cylindrical battery cell manufacturing process and product, a strong track record of building and leading cross-functional engineering teams, significant experience regarding quality processes and the ability to make decisions in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment. As the leader of Tesla Cell Quality, this role entails significant executive communication to Tesla leaders.
This role is based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Austin, Texas, with occasional travel required between sites, and the option for significant travel or splitting time possible.
- Build and lead the product quality team, with responsibility for 4680 program quality, metrology, audit and quality compliance.
- Establish and meet clear quality standards, metrics and objectives for all global Tesla 4680 Cell Manufacturing factories.
- Lead quality reviews during product, factory line, and integration launches, supporting factory and company leadership to make the right decisions for our customers
- Lead root cause analysis of failures, and lead cross-functional team to find solutions.
- Establish and drive feedback loops to communicate about fleet failures and drive architecture, engineering, and manufacturing changes to improve product quality.
- Supervision of the metrology, teardown, quality lab, audit and quality process planning to meet Tesla quality standards, supporting manufacturing and engineering to resolve issues and close quality feedback loops.
- Develop and lead execution of an incoming quality plan to drive continuous improvement of supplier performance.
- Establish, lead and continuously improve processes for purchased part quality reviews, audits and sorting.
- Lead Advanced Product Quality Planning activities for new product launches, new manufacturing lines and major process changes.
- Continue improvements efforts of quality data systems, first pass yield, scrap and continuous improvement opportunities in order to implement the best practices in operations.
- Review and build quality process control plans and work closely with manufacturing quality teams to make continuous process quality improvements.
- Outstanding cylindrical battery cell product and process knowledge; deep and driving passion for product quality and an incredible customer experience.
- Strong leadership style, excited to interact with Tesla executive leadership as a champion of Tesla battery cell product quality.
- Degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering; or equivalent relevant experience.
- Years of experience in leading product quality, quality systems and quality programs.
- Experience as a team leader in a fast-paced environment.
- Years of experience using quality problem solving methods such as Six Sigma to root cause, solve and iteratively improve product quality.
- Detail oriented, with the ability to effectively handle multiple priorities.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate. effectively across levels and functions.
