The Job Description

Performs intermediate, skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of buildings, facilities and grounds, performing maintenance and repair work in electrical, painting, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and related fields.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class should have a good understanding in one or more specialized fields (HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing). Work involves responsibility for multiple building sites operating both independently and as a team when necessary. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Buildings Director and is evaluated through periodic discussions, observation of completed work and feedback from contractors and citizens.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Maintains and repairs buildings, equipment, facilities, and structures within the county.
  • Installs, rebuilds, repairs and maintains various plumbing fixtures in buildings.
  • Installs and replaces electrical equipment, wiring, breakers, switches, controls, motors and light sources.
  • Performs light to moderate carpentry work.
  • Inspects facilities for issues, schedules and/or performs preventive maintenance.
  • Runs errands; picks up and delivers mail, supplies and equipment as required.

Additional Job Duties

  • Respond to emergency calls and be on call rotation.
  • Responsible for buildings, employee and county visitor’s security and environmental safety, Also, opening and closing of buildings as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor, manager or director.
  • Be onsite and able to respond during State of Emergency and natural disaster events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and techniques of carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and landscaping trades.
  • Basic knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, building plans and other technical instructions.
  • Ability to safely use and maintains tools and power equipment.
  • Have basic computer and smart phone skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to give clear oral and written instructions in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, coworkers, supervisors and citizens while maintaining a professional appearance.

Physical Requirements

  • Work requires the regular exertion of up to 20 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 40 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force or more.
  • Clear vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires visual inspection, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school with experience in the construction, repair or renovation of buildings and buildings systems including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC and landscaping experience is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
