Summary:

The Accommodation Assistant assists the Director of Accessibility Services with reviewing and approving student accessibility accommodations, including all sites and online programs. This position assists with University-wide leadership in the area of disability awareness and will work closely with all constituencies on campus to facilitate access to courses, programs, services, and facilities for students with disabilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for assisting with the coordination and implementation of accommodations for University students Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and PA state and Gwynedd Mercy University policies. Provides guidance and education to faculty and staff regarding accessibility

  • Review and interpret confidential psycho-educational evaluations to determine eligibility for services and prescribe appropriate academic accommodations
  • Develop, monitor, adjust, and evaluate individual accommodation plans for students with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, LD, ADD, Physical Disabilities, Sensory Impairments and other conditions based on individual documentation, needs, and abilities
  • Advise students, faculty, and departments on appropriate and recommended reasonable academic and physical accommodations
  • Interpretation and application of the regulations of Americans with Disabilities (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and University policies.
  • Monitor the academic and psychosocial progress of students with disabilities and provide learning support as needed, including:
      • Self-advocacy skills training for students with disabilities
      • Information to students to improve their knowledge, skills and usage of assistive technologies to support disability
  • Assist with evaluation, selection, and implementation of adaptive software
  • Stay current with ADA law and inform and educate others as appropriate
  • Maintain appropriate referral resources for ADA needs
  • Maintain confidential records.
  • Track, maintain, and share as appropriate records of student disabilities, accommodation usage, and trends
  • Provide ongoing guidance and education to faculty and staff related to supporting students with disabilities
  • Participate in retention efforts as needed

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Some experience working in higher education with students with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder and other disabilities.

  • Knowledge of psycho-educational test instruments
  • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education and disability
  • Knowledge of assistive computer technology and resources
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and evaluating disability documentation (including psycho-educational evaluations) and determining equal access accommodations appropriate to the individual and the setting
