Principle Designer
BUSINESS: Refinery Valves - DeltaValve
LOCATION: Sandy, UT
DIRECT REPORTING: Sr. Manager, Engineering

POSITION DETAILS
Position Summary
In this position you will collaborate with the Engineers to strategically design & draft the customer specific DeltaValve current products and assist with new product development from engineering specifications using SolidWorks. You will develop, prepare, and check complex: models, assemblies, drawings, ECOs, bills of materials, renderings, and animations. You’ll utilize existing PLM systems to create and manage bills of materials, product life cycle, document management, submittals, and distribution of Engineering documents. You will have responsibility for recognizing, identifying, and correcting product design for manufacturability and functionality. You will mentor and train team members and suggests, implement, and drive process improvements in support of a high performing, efficient organization and team growth.
Principal Activities
You will:
- Work closely and collaborate with engineers and engineering management.
- Design valve components according to applicable Standards (ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B16.34, MSS Specifications, API Standards, etc.) using SolidWorks.
- Prepare accurate, clean, correct and complete drawings using SolidWorks (forgings, castings, fabrications, weldments, exploded assemblies, etc.) & bills of materials to clearly define products that will be provided to production, company suppliers, and customers.
- Manage the full process of driving a concept or idea to a fully functional, accurately designed and working final product, whether through the new product development (NPD) process or an update or change to a current product.
- Maintain the integrity of the data input into the PLM system, to support the system administration.
- Ensure all is designed in accordance to established industry practices and ensures the rules of fit/form/function are supported for product in the field.
- Contact and communicate requirements to suppliers and gather information for accurate product and material evaluation and selection.
- Work with PLM IT systems administrators making sure all documents are entered into the PLM system correctly and are maintained for DeltaValve’s use.
- Prepare renderings and animations using SolidWorks and other related tools to support sales and marketing in their presentations to customer.
- Work in tandem with engineering, as needed, to support sales with customer presentations.
- Assist and support the Sales and Proposals departments with required documentation.
- Peer review of engineering deliverables to ensure best engineering practices are applied and communicated to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Technicians and suppliers to determine the best methods for designing (design for manufacturing) DeltaValve products.
- Assist in dispositioning and resolving customer, shop, purchasing and supplier issues.
- Support and drive an effective interchange between manufacturing, supply chain and engineering.
- Mentor and train team members, as assigned.
- Suggest, implement, and champion process improvements.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
You are/have:
- Highly mechanically inclined
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, excellent time management skills, and the ability to problem-solve design techniques and train and mentor others in the same
- Able to interpret technical documents, regulations, and specifications
- Ability to visualize objects in 3D and strategically and accurately design them for manufacturability
- Excellent skillset in design to manufacturing assemblies
- Excellent oral and written communication and relationship building skills (English)
- Expert working knowledge of SolidWorks (CSWP and/or CSWE accreditation preferred)
- Strong skillset in Microsoft Office Products
- Very knowledgeable in all aspects of ANSI Y14.5M (latest edition) drafting standards
- Strong understanding of engineering design and manufacturing processes involved in production and assembly
- Ability to collaborate and build relationships with manufacturing and engineering
- Able to troubleshoot issues in design to determine effective solutions during all stages of the design process, from design creation through to manufacturing and assembly
- Ability to administer a PLM/CAD system
Education & Experience
You have:
- A degree in either Mechanical Engineering Technology (strongly preferred), or computer-aided drafting, or a combination of education and hands-on experience.
- A minimum additional 15 years’ experience working in a design to manufacture environment, preferably designing large equipment using GD&T principles and working with forgings, castings, fabrications, weldments, exploded assemblies, etc.
