Job Summary: Syzygy Plasmonics Inc. is hiring a Patent and Technology Analyst to help our innovation efforts in photocatalyst and reactor technologies. As a member of our technical and legal teams, you will support Syzygy in identifying and documenting new inventions created by Syzygy’s cutting-edge scientists and engineers. Your write-ups will assist outside patent counsel in drafting new patent applications to protect Syzygy’s innovations. You will additionally perform technical literature and patent searches and conduct landscape analyses of various photocatalyst and reactor technologies to support Syzygy’s research and development initiatives.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop global and domestic patent filing strategies with technical leads and/or legal counsel
  • Manage US, PCT and foreign assets within software
  • Perform global freedom to operate (FTO) searches, analyze and present results
  • Conduct patent and technology landscape studies and analyses at the direction of Syzygy technical leads and/or legal counsel
  • Document interviews and meetings with Syzygy scientists, engineers, and management pertaining to invention harvesting and patent strategy.
  • Draft invention disclosure documents
  • Draft initial patent
  • Assist in the formulation of technical arguments during patent prosecution by conducting research and/or interviewing Syzygy inventors or engineers
  • Create and train teams on intellectual property patentability guidelines and processes, invention disclosures and prior art
  • Respond to office actions
  • Report patent metrics

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years practical performance of the Job Responsibilities similar to above
  • BS degree in engineering or science, preferably Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, but alternatively Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other engineering or science discipline
  • 2+ years experience working as a scientist or engineer
  • Working understanding of technical literature, including patents
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented
  • Excellent technical research skills (journal articles, U.S. and foreign patent documents, and internet content)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Polite persistence and collaboration skills to ensure on-time, high-quality results
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Helpful Background:

  • Broad familiarity with a range of engineering disciplines: Chemical, Mechanical, Software & Electrical
  • Basic knowledge of chemical plants and processes
  • Basic knowledge of catalysis
  • Experience preparing technical drawings using PowerPoint, Visio, or CAD programs
  • USPTO registration as a patent agent would be a distinct advantage, but is not required
