• Performing manual work functions associated with general construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds-keeping of City parks, culture, and recreation facilities;
• Adhering to established safety procedures, monitoring work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure the safety of others, and wearing protective gear;
• Applying chemical pesticides and fertilizers as appropriate, prepareing pre-emergent chemicals for treatment of landscapes, and taking precautions to ensure chemicals are used properly;
• Operating light and medium-sized equipment, a variety of commercial grade power equipment, machinery, and hand tools.
• Supporting department programs/events, such as, setting up stage/tents/parade barriers, transporting event equipment, and assisting with cleanup;
• Maintaining water quality and chemistry, pool pumps and filters, and daily pool operations to include cleaning and vacuuming at Stonewall Park Pool;
• Performing general athletic field maintenance to include striping, dragging, raking, home plate/base repairs, and operating field irrigation;
• Working with staff, volunteers, and contractors to perform manual labor in support of preventative and general park maintenance; and
• Communicating with their supervisor, City staff and the public as needed to coordinate work activities to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the City parks, culture and recreation facilities.

Parks Maintenance Worker I: High school diploma or GED is required; supplemented by previous experience in maintenance of public parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and/or pool infrastructure and operations is preferred.

Parks Maintenance Worker II: High school diploma or GED is required; supplemented by three years of training and/or experience in the construction and maintenance of public parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and/or public pool infrastructure and operation of equipment used for repair, maintenance and installation.

For both positions: an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Special Requirements:
Incumbent will attend training courses as required (e.g. first aid, pesticide re-certification, playground inspections, tree seminars, pool operator’s certification, defensive driving, etc.).

Incumbent may be required to possess and maintain additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the City including a Virginia Pesticide Applicators License (Registered Technician), Certified Playground Safety Inspector, Pool Operator Certification, Certified Pool Service Technician, and Athletic Field/Turf Management Certification.
