Job description
Position Summary:
Delivers care for patients with ophthalmologic conditions or needs across their life span, assesses and documents the effects of care. Under the supervision of the ophthalmologist and clinic manager, performs both basic and advanced ophthalmic exam techniques, including specialized testing. Responsible for teaching and instruction to other clinic staff, medical students and residents. Provides general clinical support functions. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, medical and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for practice.

High School Diploma (Equivalent) or Higher
Required
Additional education requirements
High School diploma or higher with training and experience in an outpatient ophthalmology setting. Completion of training program for Ophthalmic Technician desired.
Certification & Licensures
Additional Certification & Licensures details
Actively Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification or Certified Ophthalmic Technician preferred. Active BLS certification required.
Experience
2 years Healthcare/Medical - Ophthalmology Required
Additional experience requirements
At least 2-years experience as ophthalmic.

Title and Definition
Assessment/Patient Preparation
Prepares patients for the physician. Visit by assessing patient history for medical and surgical problems, patient medications, pain level, risk factors, current complaint and other needs to include physical, psychosocial, emotional and educational as appropriate. Prioritizes care based on assessment. Documents assessment per clinic policy

Understands that customers are patients, family, visitors, co-workers, staff in other departments, physicians, students, and all other persons with whom one interacts whether in person, via phone, or in writing/e-mail. Departmental Responsibilities
Follows hospital and departmental rules and regulations by adhering to policies/procedures such as confidentiality, code of conduct, attendance and payroll policies. Maintains a safe and clean patient care area. Uses work time productively. Attends at least 80% of staff meetings. Eliminates the words, 'It's not my job.
Implementation
Knowledgeable of age specific and cultural/religious principles, safely performs and correctly documents nursing interventions consistent with hospital an clinic policies. Assists physicians as needed. Communicates pertinent information to patients/families regarding their care and/or procedures. Gives report accurately and timely to staff members using SBAR when patient hand off is needed.
Performance Improvement
Participates in data gathering and other quality assessment/ improvement activities. Works with co-workers to assure departmental compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements. Provides input into performance improvement activities to assist department in efforts to improve departmental processes. Is receptive to change and growth. Meets deadlines in a timely manner
Ophthalmic Specific Competency
Demonstrates consist clinical skill in using ophthalmic equipment to assess and treat patients (i.e., vision screening, refracting, tonometry, A & B scans, visual fields, etc. and dilation as needed. Ensures proper preparation of supplies/equipment before beginning procedures. Assures physicians with treatments and performed to ensure patient safety. Assists patients with medication refills and patient requests.
Professional Development
Completes all mandatory education requirements such as BLS, Healthstream and other assigned courses to maintain credentials and comply with hospital requirements. Maintains current state licensure. Participates in continuing education to enhance knowledge and skills. Assists in the orientation and development of other staff members, students and residents and provides feedback to supervisor when requested
Safety
Accurately and legibly documents using hospital approved abbreviations, appropriate signatures, titles, date, time for authentication. Knowledgeable and adheres to fire and safety regulations and disaster plans. Utilizes appropriate identifiers for patient identification. Uses 'read back' for any verbal or telephone orders, or critical lab results. Washes hands appropriately. Maintains safe and clean environment.
Scheduling
Provides back up support to schedule patients when needed. Coordinates referrals for surgery procedures and assists with outside referrals.
