Position Summary:
Oversees daily observations of the Sun with the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array, investigates anomalies, and takes immediate actions to fix them or alert others for help. Identifies deficiencies and seeks improvement in existing observational procedures to enhance data quality. Oversees the operation of the computer systems for obtaining and storing data from the array. Establishes and performs data system backup procedures. Occasionally aids the Chief Observer in routine maintenance of the facility, and in identifying and servicing malfunctioning equipment.

Essential Functions:
Performs observational duties with close attention to detail. Identifies observing system anomalies and carries out corrective actions. Notifies others of problems and aids in finding solutions to restore operation and avoid similar problems in the future. Maintains the computer systems with up-to-date operating systems, security patches, and proper network and storage performance. Fully understands and runs software that is part of the data pipeline, including data analysis, calibration, and data quality checks. Demonstrates ability to follow directions and displays a positive attitude when assisting the Chief Observer in servicing and maintenance of array equipment. Prepare daily observing logs. Maintain the data browsing website and document solar activities as appropriate.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
Advanced degree (MS, PhD) in Physics, Astronomy, or related field, or BS and at least two years’ experience in astronomical observations with a research facility. Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems. Aptitude for trouble-shooting hardware and software. Familiarity with computer programming, shell scripts, and the Python programming language.
