Since 1980, The Way Back, Inc. has provided housing to people with mental illness. The Agency's mission is to provide the resources to help people with psychiatric disabilities reintegrate into the community and to assist them with their recovery. Counselors provide support, education and supervision to residents. Counselors evaluate resident needs, provide crisis intervention, communicate with service providers, maintain records, provide recreation, etc. This is a challenging and rewarding position with possible career advancement opportunities.
The Part-Time Per Diem (Relief) Counselor job functions are that of a Full-Time Counselor, on an as needed basis. This is a part-time job and does not have a set schedule. Per Diem Counselors work hours that they volunteer for.
Relief Counselors work various shifts at our five (5) Community Residences throughout Suffolk County. Rocky Point, Patchogue, Cutchogue, Commack, East Northport. Each house has 10-12 mentally ill clients (co-ed), ages 18 and up, who suffer from Bi-Polar, Schizophrenia, Depression, Anxiety, Personality Disorders. Our clients are independent, there is no personal hygiene care involved e.g.(toileting, bathing, feeding).
This is the perfect opportunity for College students who are pursuing education in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services field.
The Per-Diem Counselor job pays $17.00/hr. with and overtime rate of $25.50/hr. Per Diem staff must be flexible and have availability through the week to work various shifts at all 5 sites.
The hours that Relief Per Diem staff can work are as follows (FYI - Each week varies with coverage needs):
Week: 7:00 am-3:00 pm; 1:00 pm-11:00 pm; 4:00pm-9:00pm; 11:00 pm-7:00 am (overnight awake week shift)
Weekends: 8:00am-4:00pm; 3:30 pm-11:30 pm; 11:00pm-9:00am (can do sleep shift at site from 11:00 pm-7:00 am)
The Counselor answers directly and is subordinate to the Program Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
1. Evaluate individual client needs and meet them.
2. Provide daily supervision to clients.
3. Assess client's functional ability.
4. Provide crisis recognition and management.
5. Supervise each client's medication management.
6. Retrieve, log in, and monitor clients' prescriptions for accuracy and timely renewals.
7. Conduct medication inventories.
8. Regularly communicate with service providers.
9. Assist clients with chore completion and room maintenance.
10. Supervise and directly assist clients with food preparation/cooking.
11. Facilitate house meetings and submit minutes.
12. Accompany and oversee clients in food and petty cash shopping.
13. Coordinate menu planning and food/petty cash shopping lists.
14. Maintain client records.
15. Implement service plan, service plan reviews, and provide services according to agency procedures.
16. Establish Service Plan Review (SPR) meetings for primary clients.
17. Attend meetings in residence and community (day programs. etc.)
18. Prepare and conduct adult daily living skills and recreation activities.
19. Monitor participation in after-care program/daily activity.
20. Maintain communication with supervisor, family and service providers.
21. Conduct fire drills.
22. Organize, facilitate, and participate in client recreation activities.
23. Any other duties which, from time to time, may be assigned by the Program Supervisor.
Skills Required:
1. Ability to complete work accurately and efficiently
2. Ability to independently organize one's weekly and/or monthly tasks.
3. Ability to write legibly with grammatical accuracy.
4. Ability to work on diversified duties.
Education and/or Experience Required:
High school diploma, considerable knowledge of mental illness required.
Additional Job Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license and insurance.
Must successfully complete fingerprinting as required by the NYS Office of Mental Health.
