Medical Surgical Nurse Manager
Job description
The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse manager who is primarily responsible for providing continual clinical and administrative direction for a specific patient care unit on a 24-hour basis. The Nurse Manager is also responsible for the recommendation, development and implementation of policies and procedures for the patient care unit, as well as the evaluation of the delivery of care.
Communicates Effectively
- Effectively communicates with all stakeholders in a timely manner
- Effectively resolves delays and conflict in an effort to expedite bed assignment.
- Accepts verbal orders as needed
- Maintains required records and logs as assigned
- Achieve effective hand off with nursing each day
- Identifies, trends and reports barriers on patient throughput; recommends process improvements
Communicates with payers to assure financial certification requirements are met
- Obtains pre-certification for services when required
- Provides payer notification when required
- Screens self-pay direct admits for residency
Coordinates assignments of patients to beds utilizing bed management software
- Accepts and processes all requests for room assignments timely and appropriately
- Working with the medical staff, triages patients awaiting beds to assure most critical needs are met first
- Assures patients with communicable disease are accommodated with appropriate bed assignments
- Coordinates direct admits between community physicians and hospitalist in a timely manner.
- Maintains an accurate listing of patients awaiting beds; facilitates throughput
Leadership
- Supervision of patient care maintains / evaluates the effectiveness of the patient care delivery system on any given shift
- Visits all patient care units on at least twice per shift to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers.
- Identifies complex patient needs and/or management situations and takes appropriate action to include involvement/hands care.
- Supervision of patient care maintains / evaluates the effectiveness of the patient care delivery system on any given shift
- Visits all patient care units on at least twice per shift to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers.
- Identifies complex patient needs and/or management situations and takes appropriate action to include involvement/hands care.
- Coordinates and evaluates services rendered by all departments during the respective shift on an ongoing basis, acting as a support person after hours for ancillary departments.
- Assists staff to insure delivery of efficient quality nursing care to include performing direct patient care when necessary, to include making decisions using sound nursing/management judgment exhibiting critical thinking skills.
- Assumes role of patient advocate, demonstrating respect for the dignity/privacy of each patient; interacts in a courteous manner.
- Thoroughly investigates complaints from patients, visitors, physicians, ancillary departments and makes the appropriate interaction, acting as liaison between administration, doctors, nurses and visitors. Documents according to policy.
- Effectively interacts with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care
- Effectively coordinates the transfer of patients within hospital and/or to other institutions as necessary and assigns all admissions to appropriate rooms based on needs, infection control and availability of resources to include consideration of staff competencies. May in some cases actually be required to assist with physical patient transport as needed.
- Effectively responds to crisis/emergency situations, to include responding to all 'codes' in a timely manner, and directs staff to prevent patient deterioration by early intervention
- Demonstrates support and assists in the communication of information to families of critical or dying patients
Education: Graduate of an approved Nursing Program Bachelor's Degree in HealthCare Administration, Management, or Nursing required. Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Posses a current licensure or permit to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee or compact state. ACLS and BLS required.
Experience/ Knowledge:
Three (3) years of clinical experience preferred. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development necessary for assessment, range of treatment and care of the specific age group of patients served. Knowledge of hospital and departmental procedures, patient care procedures and the ability to operate technical equipment as acquired through orientation.
