The Maintenance Technician will troubleshoot and identify failure causes; repair or initiate the repair of failed items and perform recovery/corrective or preventive maintenance of vehicle and wayside systems, subsystems, and components. Preventive maintenance, inspection, and adjustment tasks and procedures are well established and require normal supervision. Incumbents will follow the direction of higher-level personnel in preventive or corrective maintenance phases of work. Associates exercise considerable latitude and open judgment in the troubleshooting and recommended repair of equipment.

Key responsibilities and challenges

1. Operate, troubleshoot and repair Central Control computer console, or Wayside systems, or vehicles and components as assigned.

• Inspect vehicles and related equipment to detect failed or improperly operating equipment.
• Operate trains, doors, guideway switches, and power distribution systems in a manual mode.
• Perform electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems inspection following established procedures or other written or verbal instructions.
• Repair or replace defective parts or equipment utilizing manuals, drawings, specs, and other written or verbal instructions.

2. Support recovery of malfunctioning vehicles from system as needed.

• Respond to system failures to recover vehicles and restore system operation.

3. Conduct thorough and complete preventative maintenance checks on vehicles, systems, and subsystems as assigned.

4. Achieve and maintain all functional certifications in assigned area. 20 %

5. Continuous learning and progression through training program. 10 %

Local Specifications

• Must be able to work a 24/7/365 schedule, including weekends and holidays
• Must be able to pass a required background check and drug screening
• Must be able to work from elevated work areas and use ladders as needed.
• For safety reasons, but be able to effectively communication in written and spoken English

Qualifications & Functional Knowledge

• Must have formal training or education in electromechanical field.
• Engineering, technical school, or similar training/education required.
• Relevant experience may be a substitute.

Knowledge of the Business
*Experience in railroad, APM, or transportation industry a plus.

• Knowledge in basic electronic theory
• Aptitude for mechanical operations and operation of equipment
• Knowledge in the use and application of a variety of hand and power tools
• Knowledge in the use of simple electronic equipment

Specific examples of demonstrated initiative in past assignments are required.

• Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks and duties.
• Capacity to learn a variety of equipment operations.
• Willingness to work various shifts, as required
• Ability to read and follow instructions.

Applicant must provide examples of technical problem solving from previous experience.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills
*For reasons of safety and efficiency, communication skills, both spoken and written are critical.

• High school diploma or equivalent; Preferably an Associate degree (A.S.) in a related mechanical or technical discipline and/or Vocational Training/Certification in a related discipline.
• Previous work experience may be recognized in lieu of formal education.

Additional information and elements to consider
*The position requires regular exposure to outside weather in challenging environmental conditions.

Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Employee may be required to work in a train yard with live power tails and moving equipment. Employees are required to be able to operate heavy equipment, cranes, forklifts and Company vehicles.

• Monday to Friday
• Night shift
