Sonocharge Energy is a fast-growing advanced Li battery company located in San Diego, CA. The company is a spin-out from UC San Diego and backed by Khosla Venture. Sonocharge has developed a breakthrough solution to improve the current batteries, promising to transform many industries. The solution enables a battery to charge faster, achieving higher energy density, and improving safety features. We are looking for talented people who would like to play a key role in our engineering process, working in a fast-paced environment across different aspects to achieve the final product and make positive impact to the world.

We’re looking for someone to be the lead mechanical design engineer for the next generation of lithium-ion battery pack here at Sonocharge. This person should be dynamic to change, we’re a new startup, and willing to learn and grow into their new position. They will have the freedom and support to take a leading role on development of this new design.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Design a new generation of Sonocharge battery pack· Execute design of experiments, testing equipment management, and data analysis
  • Generate reports and presentations to communicate progress to the technical team
  • Work collaboratively with other technicians, engineers, and scientists
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers to ensure high-quality and custom products are delivered on time and to specification
  • Manage requirements for design of parts and data analysis from testing to ensure continual improvement to the mechanical design

Essential Knowledge and Skills Requirements

  • 5+ years experience with 3-D CAD and 2-D component and assembly drawing . Requires demonstrated ability to produce detailed part designs and drawings, including tolerancing, for a variety of components and assemblies
  • Experience in the design and manufacture of lithium-ion batteries (thermal, electrical or structural)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong echanical engineering analysis skills
  • A problem-solving mentality demonstrating curiosity and initiative, very independent, self-motivated and driven
  • Ability to work with a cross-functional team to ensure design objectives are met
  • Experience managing component vendors. Evaluate, select and collaborate with third party manufacturing organizations

Advantageous Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to model mechanical stresses using hand calculations or software (e.g. Altair, Nastran / Patran)
  • Ability to model thermal, electrical and chemical behaviour of battery systems
  • Written, verbal and presentation skills allowing successful coounication with management, peers and suppliers

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of hands - light to forceful handling of material
  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection daily
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
