Description

First level in the Maintenance Worker series. Under close supervision and as a member of a crew, perform unskilled to routine semi-skilled work to install, maintain, and repair the City's water distribution system including water mains, hydrants, valves, meters, and treatment plant facilities. Perform manual labor duties as assigned including: cutting, tapping and threading water pipes; locating, opening and closing main valves; setting meter boxes and water meters; flushing fire hydrants; back washing filters; and cleaning water plant grounds.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide manual assistance to other workers engaged in the maintenance of City water services including the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, water service connections, fire hydrants, and valves; installation, cleaning, repair, and adjusting of water meters; and cleaning and maintenance of water treatment equipment and facilities.
2. Use various types of hand tools including wrenches, screw drivers, hammer, shovel, pick, spade, and other similar tools.
3. Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies.
4. Set up and remove barricades and other traffic control devices, and provide work site protection as directed.
5. Operate power driven machinery such as chain saw, air hammer, air compressor, tampers and other similarly sized equipment to accomplish maintenance task assigned.
6. Operate mobile equipment such as dump trucks, crew trucks, small trenching machines, and small rubber-tire front-end loader.
7. Perform locates, marking direction, depth and location of water and sewer lines.
8. Clean tools, equipment, materials and work area.
9. Perform routine daily checks of equipment including fuel, fluid levels and tire pressure.
10. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist with other department activities or City sponsored events not under direct responsibility.
2. Perform related tasks as required.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of construction, maintenance and repair activities related to the area of work assigned.
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices and precautions applicable to task performed and equipment operated.
  • Skill in operating basic tools and equipment commonly used in assigned work area.
  • Skill in communicating in person on a one-on-one basis for the purpose of obtaining, clarifying or giving information.
  • Ability to read and understand operation manuals and chemical application instructions.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to drive standard shift vehicles.
  • Physical ability to perform essential job duties.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Ability to read and write sentences with common vocabulary usually acquired through less than high school graduation. Six months experience performing field maintenance duties, or any combination of education, training and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform essential job functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is outdoors in all weather conditions. Work requires lifting heavy objects, as much as 50 lbs. a distance of four feet from the ground. Work assignments may require stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling in awkward positions and standing for extended periods of time, Some tasks may expose workers to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise, or dangerous machinery. May work in small, cramped spaces. Must wear all safety equipment in accordance with safety regulations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Commercial Driver's License or be qualified to obtain a commercial driver's license within six months of employment as a condition of continued employment. Should a candidate not currently hold a valid commercial driver's license, if hired, the candidate must attempt to take the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License exam within the first two months.
