Job description
The Logistics Manager is responsible for shipping and receiving activities, such as freight cost analysis, freight auditing, import/export compliance, tracing, and warehouse planning.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safety conscious and always looking for preventative safety measures
- Understands the Veritas Steel Code of Conduct policy, leading by example
- Organizes assigned areas to ensure ready access to and knowledge of all projects currently in process on a daily work basis
- Prepare freight estimates for all plants during the bidding process
- Prepare competitor's freight costs so Sales can determine the advantage/disadvantage that Veritas has on each major project
- Research new transportation vendors, truckers, barges, etc.
- Build budget trackers for projects sold and monitor them accordingly
- Negotiate rates contracts with carriers and P.O. for projects
- Research new equipment, technology, etc
- Seek to bring all projects in under budget
- Schedule and plan all outbound freight for EC & Palatka and assist Wausau with the same
- Coordinate shipping and process loads with various carriers
- Assist with freight metrics reports for effective monitoring of logistics costs/services
- Audit freight invoices for correct charges by tracking and logging invoice data to support freight metrics
- Interpret carriers’ contract and pricing agreements while supporting the renewal and negotiations of contracts
- Utilize customer relations techniques to manage external and internal relationships
- Determine requirements, obtain specifications, and source raw materials, manufactured parts, supplies, and services across multiple vendors
- Organize and manage all data, forms, and logs in both paper files and electronic formats
- Negotiate with carriers to improve efficiencies and rates that directly impact the bottom line
- Improve our customers’ experience by pushing for improved service from warehouse and carrier operations
- Lead projects that improve internal processes by implementing innovative ideas
- Support Purchasing Department as needed
- Work with Senior Production Manager to identify labor requirements based on projected production/shipping schedules, overtime requirements, additional 2nd shift support, and additional postings as needed
- Work to cross-train yard members
- Document safety incidents for Human Resources
- Review timecards
- Participate in task forces, committees, and meetings as requested
- Participate in continuous process improvement activities to look for ways to reduce cost, streamline processes, and increase throughput
- Assist in overseeing Yard Senior Lead at EC Plant
- Oversee maintenance for Veritas- EC steer trailers
- Work with the Senior Lead to determine yard storage layouts
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience within trucking logistics is preferred
- Ability to logically organize files and data
- Ability to sort, collate, and organize data and files quickly and efficiently
- Must be a self-starter
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret reports, spreadsheets, and policy/procedure documents
- Must be detail-oriented, and possess the ability to work independently
- High proficiency in Excel
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- At least 5 years of professional experience within the Logistics function is required
