General Description

The purpose of this classification is to perform responsibilities that include coordinating activities that include purchasing, transportation, inventory, and warehousing.


Duties and Responsibilities


The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent
working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.


  • Direct the allocation of supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate with fleet maintenance to maintain the department’s fleet inventory and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Consult with department divisions and fire stations to determine specific purchasing needs and specifications when necessary.
  • Establish successful vendor relationships; check prices to ensure procurement at an acceptable cost.
  • Review department inventory to ensure reasonable inventory limits.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Correspondence with internal and external customers.
  • Gather information for minor equipment repairs and make recommendations regarding the feasibility of repairing or replacing department equipment and tools.
  • Package equipment, tools and supplies for shipping or repair.
  • Revise monthly supply order form as necessary and distribute to stations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain security of equipment, tools, and supplies
  • Maintain control and security of department drug boxes.
  • Perform small engine preventative maintenance (PM)
  • Maintain, repair, and perform annual certification of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), perform annual fit testing of firefighters.
  • Maintain warehouse and distribution standards and procedures.

Additional Functions

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

    • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Two years’ experience performing general warehousing duties including coordinating purchasing and allocation of supplies, fleet inventory and assist with delivery of supplies to a variety of locations.
    • Within one year of employment, must obtain certification as a Certified Air-Pak Technician at the department’s expense.

Highly Desirable: A strong background in customer service.

Knowledge Of:

  • Methods and procedures used in the receipt, storage, control, and distribution of supplies, tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Various supplies and materials related to fire suppression operations.
  • Computer and computer software applications related to office and support work such as Microsoft Word and Excel. General warehousing duties and procedures, including delivery of supplies to various locations.
  • Safety principles and practices in the warehouse environment.
  • Safe driving practices.
  • Supply sources and pricing standards.
  • Office methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Standard office equipment.
  • Basic math.

Physical Ability
: Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with regular contact with staff and the public. The position may require prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, stooping, climbing, grasping, and repetitive and fine coordination hand movement. The incumbent should have normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; and corrected hearing and vision to normal range, and must be able to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and 70 pounds with assistance. The incumbent will be driving Department vehicles.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
