Job description
Reports to: Principal
Purpose: Provides overall planning, administration, and implementation of the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and nutrition services to Sheldon CDC-Head Start.
Qualifications:
- Hold certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD), OR
- B.S. or Master’s degree in nutrition or its equivalent;
Physical and Emotional Requirements: Speaking, hearing, visual, reading, writing, word processing, mobility, consistency of temperament, ability to problem solve and work in stress providing environments.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Review nutritional assessment data for each child and make recommendations for correcting children's nutritional status, as needed.
- Provide recommendations for families struggling with food insecurity.
- Develop and monitor the provision of special diets for children with documented food allergies or other feeding problems or special nutritional needs, consulting with children's doctor as necessary. Also, ensure children with disabilities who are in need of adaptive feeding techniques or utensils are provided for them.
- Work with the Head Start Coordinators and staff to ensure program’s compliance with CACFP guidelines and Head Start Performance Standards.
- Ensure the program’s compliance with all food safety, health, and sanitation laws.
- Plan a family nutrition education activity that promotes adult/child interaction and provides opportunities for adults to gain skills or knowledge as outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards (1404.23(d)).
- Review classrooms to ensure: that foods are an integral part of the total education program; that mealtime atmosphere is conducive to socialization and development; that meals are served family style; and that the quality, quantity and size of food served is appropriate to the ages of the children.
- Review, monitor and provide technical assistance on the implementation of the Sheldon Head Start Food Services Policy, Menus and Recipes, including: food purchasing, preparation, and storage, kitchen sanitation and cleanliness, food handling and dishwashing procedures.
- Monitor to ensure that meals and snacks are prepared in such a way that a minimum of nutrients are lost from foods, that foods taste good and look appealing, and that there are ample amounts of foods for children to have as many servings as they need.
- Assist staff to plan meals far enough ahead to reduce the need for food substitution, when substitutions are necessary recommends foods of equivalent nutritional value.
- Assist staff with providing age-appropriate classroom cooking activities that comply with the Sheldon Head Start Food Service Policy.
- Determine the training needs of staff, parents and children and develop and/or deliver nutrition education including development of appropriate resources.
Terms of Employment: 9 months; $25/hour for no more than 25 hours/month
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board policy on evaluation of Certified Personnel.
