Minimum Education and Licensure: B.A./B.S. in Education with Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) and LBS1 endorsement; Experience working with students with learning disabilities; Masters's degree preferred.

The LBS1 Special Education Teacher/Case Manager will provide appropriate academic instruction for the student in the underlying basic skills that are prerequisite to success in reading, writing, and math, as well as support the student in social-emotional areas.

I. Preparation Skills

  • Develop an Individualized Education Program for each student.
  • Analyze formal and informal diagnostic assessment results and translate them into prescriptive/remedial programming.
  • Conduct informal diagnostic assessments in language and academic areas.
  • Observe students' production and methods of problem-solving.
  • Write instructional and behavior objectives.
  • Select and use methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Organize learning experiences in a logical developmental sequence.
  • Create an emotional climate conducive to learning and one that fosters the Cove therapeutic milieu.
  • Maintain student attendance records.
  • Provide assignments for a classroom aide.

II. Implementation Skills Exhibit knowledge of the subject matter to implement objectives. Utilize a clinical teaching (test-teach-test) approach.

  • Structure of the classroom environment effectively, maintain constructive control.
  • Utilize alternative and creative ways to achieve objectives in the language, academic, and social-emotional areas.
  • Relate to students with respect to their individual needs.
  • Explain, inform, and demonstrate effectively.
  • Be able to implement Cove programs.
  • Integrate remediation and language arts instruction in the content areas, e.g., science and social studies.
  • Teach the necessary content to ensure the smooth transition to the mainstream or improve the general knowledge base for those students who will remain at Cove.
  • Consciously maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Assist parents and students in understanding the student's learning disability, develop realistic expectations and goals, articulate the strengths and weaknesses of the student, and help the student become an advocate for himself/herself. Help the students understand their learning disabilities as they relate to academic tasks and social settings.
  • Promote the teaching of self-advocacy skills in the classroom and coordination of curriculum between divisions and among the classes with respect to teaching life/social/study skills that are important for successful mainstreaming and transition to other programs, schools, etc.

III. Evaluation Skills Record, evaluate, and report on-going student growth and development. * Update the Individualized Educational Program for each student.

  • Update review status on each student's Individualized Educational Program (on a quarterly basis.)
  • Write progress reports.
  • Participate in parent conferences.
  • Evaluate and report on the performance of instructional aide.

IV. Non-classroom responsibilities Participate in curriculum planning and program development. Participate in student staffings.

  • * Attend faculty meetings.
  • Communicate with parents on a consistent basis between grading periods.
  • Participate in school functions, e.g., Open House, etc.
  • Perform routine tasks, student attendance, etc.
  • Collaborate with teachers regarding the students' goals, programs, and progress.
  • Participate in school committees.

  • 8 hour shift
