Job Summary:
Performs venipunctures and capillary collection competently and expediently with as little discomfort to patient as possible. This service will encompass all duty locations according to the laboratory’s needs, or any site indicated by the Laboratory Manager. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, specimen processing, archival, and limited waived point of care testing. Can also service customers as a receptionist for the Laboratory, greeting, assisting and providing patient/family education. Maintains knowledge of Laboratory computer system in the registration process, collection, receipt, and cancellation of specimens. Promotes positive public and departmental relations. Laboratory Assistant I position is designed for entry level phlebotomy staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consistently draws blood successfully from all age groups that promote accuracy and precision in patient testing.
Can speak to and understand the specimen requirements for Laboratory tests. Knowledgeable of which color top tube and volume of blood needed and special time and temperature dependent requirements.
Demonstrate proficiency for collecting throat cultures for rapid strep testing.
Can properly demonstrate acceptable contamination rate for drawing blood cultures, based on following proper collection procedure.
Adheres to the strict criteria when performing Patient Identification – comparing, at the chair or bedside, patient information on the requisition to the in-patient’s identification band, using 2 identifiers and verbal confirmation, before venipuncture is performed. For outpatients, two identifiers are maintained by asking patient to verbalize these items and comparing to the printed requisition.
Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff at all times.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Labels and records all collection tubes with correct requisition label, along with date, time and initials.
Follows proper hand hygiene, in addition to standard universal and isolation precautions.
Knowledge of computer tasks such as collection batches, un-received specimen lists, add-ons, cancellations
Regularly prints, reviews, and take action on outstanding specimen reports.
Participates in Quality Improvement as it applies to Specimen Collections.
Disposes all sharps in a rigid biohazard container. Cleans and supplies phlebotomy trays. Maintains clean and organized work areas. Orders supplies when needed. Assists with stocking all laboratory supplies.
Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties, handles direct inquiries to the appropriate Lab departments.
Completes duties in a time efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, timed draws and trauma protocol. Knowledge of communication avenues, such as trauma pagers, and use of Vocera paging system.
Seeks guidance and direction from Technologists, Supervisors and Lab Manager as necessary.
Is responsible for and involved in the training and mentorship of new employees and students.
Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.
Assists Clinical Laboratory Scientists, receiving and triaging specimens to the proper work areas.
Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.

Education/Experience Requirements:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Phlebotomy certification or Medical Secretary Certification preferred.
