Job description

Work Location: The Detention Services Section consists of two facilities. Hale Ho`omalu, our Kapolei detention facility, is a closed secured 24/7 operating facility which provides short-term detention of juveniles pending disposition of their situation by the court. Home Maluhia (shelter) is located in Honolulu and is a non-secured 24/7 operating facility which provides therapeutic counseling and rehabilitative services for status offenders and minor law violators who do not require detention. The Kitchen Helper position works in both locations but reports to Home Maluhia in Honolulu.
Hours of Work: The positions require work beyond regularly scheduled work hours on short notice to assist with the preparation of meals for a 24 hour/7 day secure detention facility; this may require work beyond 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a work week including evenings, days off and holidays.
The position is responsible for transporting meals and/or food items between Home Maluhia in Honolulu and Hale Ho`omalu Juvenile Detention Facility in Kapolei on a daily basis. The position also assists with the preparation, cooking, and serving of various foods and desserts; cleans kitchen and dining room areas; washes and cleans kitchen utensils and equipment; oversees the work of juveniles assigned to work in the kitchen; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Selective Certification Requirement - Driver's License: Due to the driving duties of the position, applicants must possess a valid and unexpired driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.
Selective Certification Requirement - Lifting/Carrying: Applicants must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 70 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: In accordance with the PREA Federal law, the Hawai`i State Judiciary shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with detainees in juvenile facilities and lockups, with inmates detained in a prison or jail, or with residents of community confinement facilities who:
a. Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution;
b. Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse;
c. Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in b above; or
d. Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
