As a junior economist at Numerator, you will be responsible for analyzing consumer data and preparing forecasts for inflation and consumer spending, you will write memos on how changes in macroeconomic conditions affect consumer behavior, and you will prepare presentations for high-profile clients on how their businesses will likely be impacted by changing economic conditions. In addition, you will have access to one-of-a-kind data on consumer purchasing behaviors that you can use to develop and inform your own research agenda. This position reports directly to Numerator’s Chief Economist and will involve cross-functional communication with sales and business strategy teams within Numerator.

Role Responsibilities

• Preparing and releasing monthly reports on inflation, retail sales, consumer confidence, and the state of the U.S. consumer
• Working with public data sources, such as U.S. Census data, Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis data, in addition to working with Numerator’s proprietary consumer insights data
• Executing special projects depending on the policy/economic environment, such as analyzing how individuals change their consumption behavior in times of inflation and recession, in response to tax credits or stimulus checks, and in response to advertising

Skills & Experience

• R programming, Excel, and Powerpoint proficiency
• Highly effective written and spoken communication skills
• Knowledge and prior experience working with large, public data sources ideal; genuine interest in utilizing Numerator data to develop and pursue your own research agenda
• Masters degree in economics and concurrent enrollment in the dissertation-writing phase of an economics PhD program preferred but not required; candidates with strong undergraduate degrees in economics or related subjects and with 2-3 years of work experience following their Bachelors degree are also encouraged to apply
• Chicago location preferred, in-office ~2 days per week at least in the beginning
