Job Summary

The Journeyman Plumber maintains the heating, water, gas and plumbing systems using hand and power tools such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding equipment, sewer camera, pipe locator, and related plumbing tools. The Journeyman Plumber also practices preventive maintenance of plumbing tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the plumbing trade.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs journeyman-level work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems by inspecting the work site to determine the materials equipment, tools, and method to be used, locating underground piping, as required, developing a plan or layout for the work, updating and following blueprints, sketches, or schematics, assembling, building, repairing, rebuilding, modifying, or installing materials and equipment as required by the scope of work, and using hand and power tools common to the plumbing trade.
  • Completes assigned projects with quality workmanship by using hand or power tools (such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding tools, pipe threaders and cutters, gas leak detector, sewer camera, pipe locator, and appropriate chemicals) to install, alter, or rebuild high pressure steam, water, and gas lines, valves, traps, drains, basins, faucets, electronic flush valves and faucets, lavatories, sinks, hydrants, and other plumbing fixtures and equipment, cutting and joining pipes (both threaded and fusion welded), and recommending the use of additional departmental personnel or contract personnel (as appropriate) to meet assigned completion targets.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, electronic flush valves and faucets, and drinking fountains, or connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by making adjustments in pumps, regulators, and associated piping, threading, bending, or fusion welding pipe either by hand or by use of power equipment, screwing, bolting or fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, and soldering, lead wiping, and/or acetylene cutting and welding connections to seal joints where necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree preferred but not required
  • 5+ years’ technical and trade experience
  • Current plumbing license
  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance and repairs of plumbing systems
  • Understanding of the current regulations within the field
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills on a technical level
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • General knowledge of power tools and techniques for care and safe use
  • Plumbing troubleshooting and repair
  • Provide an acceptable driver’s abstract and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Strong customer service skills

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:

  • Climbing up and down on ladders and equipment
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to pick-up a minimum of 25 pounds consistently and carry up to 250 feet unassisted
  • Operate handheld power tools
  • Wear personal protective equipment
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours per work week and up to 12 hours per day

Working Environment:

  • Work outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work on concrete floors and uneven surfaces for up to 8 hours
  • The Plumber may work in awkward environments and will have to carry all required equipment and supplies at all times.
  • Sensory demands include exposure to the smells associated with sewer and water, exposure to the sounds associated with power tools and construction sites, and exposure to dust and other debris associated with the use of power tools and current home conditions, all of which can cause sensory strain including headaches
