Position Overview
This position is under the umbrella of the school Culture Department. The primary responsibility of this position is to transform student’s thinking in order to change their behaviors. The goal is to condition students to make responsible decisions on a consistent basis. This position requires one to facilitate behavior orientation classes for students who have made irresponsible decisions and need to learn from their mistakes. The classes are an alternative to ISS and may also include implementing detention and other behavior consequences for students. The position also requires the candidate to complete and manage all administrative documentation and submissions of accurate information into the appropriate data systems in a timely manner involving student discipline. Additionally, this position will provide support in managing student’s movement throughout the building as well as support school-wide culture initiatives.
Responsibilities
The In-School Behavior Specialist will be held accountable for:
- Facilitate Decision-Making for Success and Habits of Success classes
- Serving as in-school suspension coordinator
- Logging communication with parents regarding student behavior
- Input all discipline information into appropriate data systems daily (Powerschool, etc)
- Provide weekly data on Decision-Making for Success and Habits of Success classes
- Issuing appropriate, minor consequences based on our code of conduct, including responding to and documenting discipline referrals from classroom teachers
- Intervening and circumventing verbal and physical altercations between students
- Support the monitoring of Live School and inform the Assistant Principal of Culture
- Logging and tracking individual student tardy data; contacting parents when necessary
- Creating and maintaining files of student incident reports
- Facilitating peer mediations to resolve student conflicts
- Attending local professional development sessions and training
Desired knowledge, skills and abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and accomplish specific tasks as requested
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff
- Ability to stand and walk through campus for long periods of time
- Ability to maintain confidentiality surrounding sensitive student information
- Ability to establish and maintain professional and supportive relationships with students with the objective of supporting their educational goals
- Demonstrates team spirit, initiative, and a willingness to collaborate with all members of the school community
Qualifications
- Completion of a bachelor's degree
- Three or more years of specific experience as Dean, Behavior Specialist, Intervention Specialist working with school culture and student behaviors in an educational setting
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Documents and email
- Experience managing the discipline outside of the classroom
- Experience in a socio-emotional learning environment preferred
- Three or more years of experience working in behavior management and student accountability
