Role and Tasks:


This position is primarily to serve the ED patient volume with an additional ED trained RN. As ED census allows, the House Supervisor is accountable for oversight of the scheduled shift as the on-site representative for hospital administration. Will carry a phone/MEDX for ease of access by staff and administration. Will round on all patient care and staffed areas on shift.


  • This position is to advocate for and coordinate Admissions to SVH. This employee will be responsible to carry out the policy: Census Management
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills. Resolving or escalating staff, patient, family concerns to appropriate leadership. Notifies appropriate leadership per admin guidance. De-escalation training required.
  • Collaborate with charge nurse and ED RN/tech to ensure staff are provided break coverage.
  • Adhere to SVH policies and procedures on his/her shift, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Aware of insufficient staffing and facilitate in obtaining staff when needed. Fill in for staffing needs in ED. Collaborates with the M/S charge nurse for staffing needs. Performs staffing reach out to fill open staffing needs or delegates this task to fill any sudden changes in staffing.
  • Strong clinical skills. Able to function as a team member as well as leader to ensure quality care for patients. Appropriately cross-trained to other departments.
  • Direct patient care duties with Outpatient infusions as the need arises. (Day shift)
  • Ensure competency with dual EMR systems.
  • Triage and care of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) with the ability to handoff quickly to tend to other aspects noted in this JD.
  • Responds to all Rapid Response Code Blue events, is the team leader in these events until the arrival of a provider. Code Debrief.
  • In collaboration with manager/charge/ED or OP nurse, coordinates with the patient care units any patient transfer to higher level of care.
  • Assists with other audit and surveillance duties as assigned
  • Performs as the Incident Commander with any Fire, Life, Safety issue until an administrator is on site. Suggest taking ICS 100, 200, 700.
  • Identifies any internal triage event and responds per policy.
  • Communicates with ancillary and support departments on patient conditions, needs, and concerns such as any CT/MRI downtime, lab analyzer down time. Face time with Security and communicate any mutual concerns.
  • Responsible for filing reports as designated
  • Takes part in just in time training of new employees, new graduate level staff, agency staff. Also the just in time training needs when a new piece of equipment is brought on site, or a high risk low volume skill set is needed, such as ABG’s, chest tube care, etc.

Education/Qualifications

  • A Registered Nurse with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Recent Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit experience required
  • Current ALS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS certifications, De-escalation training (obtain within first 90 days if not current)
  • Collaboration skills are a priority and the ability to be flexible
  • Previous Leadership/Nursing supervisor/Nurse Educator experience preferred
  • Strong Computer skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Phone skills
  • Communication skills
  • Organizational skills

KEY Competency

Collaboration, Leadership, Advanced nursing skill of ED or ICU is required


Position Summary

The House Supervisor is a support to all departments with special expertise to help with surge of patient care in the SVH ED. This person will supervise the departments of the hospital as a whole in the absence of manager.

The House Supervisor must possess the ability to make independent decisions that are evidence based or have a policy or procedure to support it. This RN must know regulatory guidelines that pertain to nursing care. This RN would be familiar with some aspects of Utilization and Swing Bed referral as it pertains to admission to both Med-Surg Inpatient, Observation and Swing Bed.

The House Supervisor must have strong skills with verbal and written communication. The house supervisor attributes are someone who is flexible to cover breaks in any nursing department for a variety of staff levels, have a cheerful disposition and be the best at team dynamics. The House Supervisor would report to the Director of Nursing.
