We are currently seeking a Histology Technician in the Columbia, SC area.

Place of Performance: The Histology Technician services will be performed on-site at the VA Columbia Medical Center in Columbia, SC.

Duties:

• Performs testing accurately, identifies methodology problems, and enters data as required.
• Performs, resolves, and documents quality control to produce quality results.
• Generates incomplete worksheets for current rotation to document the status of missed or missing specimens.
• Reviews critical values and notifies appropriate personnel with documented read-back according to established protocols.
• Takes the time to determine workload priorities and to organize work at the beginning of the shift.
• Performs equipment maintenance, seeking assistance from colleagues, if necessary, in order to compete work in a timely manner and within established time frames.
• The employee's performance is reliable, competent, and is maintained with minimum supervision.
• Employee performs other duties assigned, as required, in a timely and efficient manner.
• Technical Knowledge: Microbiology
• Abides by all procedures and policies set forth by the Microbiology Department.
• Determines proper collection and timely submission of specimens.
• Processes specimens in a timely manner.
• Inoculates specimens onto appropriate culture media and incubates cultures according to established protocol.
• Prepares and examines slides and stains for morphological identification of microorganisms.
• Performs and reports molecular tests in accordance with established procedures, to meet turn-around-time criteria.
• Performs quality control procedures on culture media.
• Analyzes and interprets test and control data.
• Reports results expediently (e.g. stat gram stains, positive blood/body fluid smears, and cultures).
• Follows blood culture protocols set forth by the Microbiology Department, including processing, removal, notifications, and gram stain reading.
• Investigates inconsistent results and initiates corrective actions when warranted.
• Prepares reagents and quality control organism cultures, as needed.
• Demonstrates knowledge of principles and skills in microbiology.
• Also, responsible for coordinating scheduled periodic preventative maintenance and repair calls for VA owned equipment and maintain record as such.

• Full-time, Part-time and PRN scheduling is available

Qualified candidates will be expected to submit the following:

• Current resume
• Registry/certification in Histology from ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology.

Pay: From $37.23 per hour

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
• Weekend availability

• Columbia, SC 29209: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)

Experience:

• Pathology & Histology Technicians: 2 years (Preferred)
