Job Summary:

• Receives specimens from surgical or diagnostic cases and from autopsies and identifies by number; must ensure accurate identification of specimens; must log all specimens in the appropriate log.
• Must have the ability to dehydrate, clear, and impregnates tissue using a tissue processor.
• Must have the ability to tri specimens into bocks and fix tissues in formalin or other fixing solution for prescribed length of time.
• Must be able to cut thins sections of specimens, using various types of microtome knives.
• Must have ability to stain specimen for diagnosis.
• Have ability to prepare solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures.
• Must be able to sharpen and hone microtome knives (if disposable knives are not used) and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Must keep current files on data concerning histopathological methods and procedures.
• Must be able to prepare body fluids and exudates for cytological diagnosis if done in house; when sent out for processing, assure that they are in proper fixative and properly accessioned with complete information being transported with the specimen.
• Must perform daily transcription of pathology reports, charts completed, signed reports in patient's medical records and send copies to attending physicians.

Skill/Educational Requirements:

• Associate Degree in Science
• Histology technician training, must obtain registration within two years
