GENERAL SUMMARY:

Summary:
The Histology Assistant, under the general supervision of the Histology Supervisor, is responsible for accessioning and transport of tissue specimens and slides, preparing tissue for further testing, performing maintenance on laboratory equipment and disposing of hazardous materials (specimens, chemicals) as necessary. Performs data entry and maintains records such as accession and temperature logs. Maintains slide and block files, matches slides and reports and troubleshoots and resolves inquiries and problems. The Histology Assistant may participate in fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures at the patient bedside to prepare and stain slides for the Pathologist. They may also assist the Histotechnologist and/or the Pathologist by providing support during grossing activities. They may assist in cytology specimen preparation. Performs all duties and procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures and in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Assists with specialized procedures (such as FNAs) at the patient bedside including responsibility for preparation and staining of slides for the Pathologist.
2. Manages the specimen transport process for sendouts and transfer of samples/slides between campuses. This includes creation and receipt of packing lists utilizing bar code scanning to ensure accurate tracking as well as packing of samples in accordance with established regulatory and departmental processes.
3. Accessions cases and manages requisitions. Sets up gross specimens in an orderly manner with cassettes, always maintaining the integrity of the cassette to specimen relationship.
4. Takes slides off of stainer, coverslips slides, Beaker slide process verification (Bar code scanning for tracking)
5. Manages the slide/block filing duties including pulling of slides/blocks when necessary
6. May perform maintenance on equipment, as needed or requested. Aids laboratory staff in maintaining inventory of supplies. Knowledge of biological specimen disposition, storage procedures and techniques. Performs additional functions ensuring that patient identification is complete and correct.
7. Performs maintenance on departmental equipment as necessary. Disposes of hazardous materials as appropriate.
8. Picks up specimens from OR, GI lab, etc.
9. Demonstrates financial responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift. Recognizes low inventory situations and alerts appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Inventories and/or orders section supplies to ensure adequate stock is available as assigned by/or in the absence of the supervisor.
10. Independently performs and documents all tasks and procedures in compliance with all personal and section accreditation standards from JC and state/federal licensure while maintaining accuracy in all job functions. Communicates appropriately all unusual/unexpected situations and helps to resolve them. Consults appropriate personnel regarding all difficulties, technical questions or unresolved problems.
11. Performs all tasks, procedures, and documentation within laboratory standards for timeliness without reminder. Responds to changes in workload as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage.
12. Embraces culture of safety: Ensures all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times, disinfects work areas prior to end of each shift. Notifies immediately any supervisor or management of any inappropriate conduct on the part of any lab employee.
13. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities


REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Preferred: At least 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory, preferably in a histology lab.
