General Description
Serves as Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer. Responsible for the creation and dissemination of clear, concise and accurate law enforcement information via various related platforms.
Examples of Work Performed
Act as spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office. Communicates directly with the public and media to address questions and represents the Sheriff and office as assigned.
Assists in coordinating teleconference programs, including scheduling, setting up equipment, and supplying program materials to participants.
Assists Community Policing Unit/Community Outreach Unit to address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities and crime prevention.
Attends staff meetings and special events as required.
Coordinates and monitors communications between the Sheriff’s Office and the community including social media.
Coordinates press conferences to announce major news or address crisis.
Consults with and assists other members of the Sheriff’s Office regarding media and public requests for information, reports, statistical data, and information concerning confidential Sheriff’s Office investigations and operations, and ongoing criminal investigations.
Develops and implements a communication strategy that includes media outreach and social media content creation.
Develops and maintains relationships with the local media, including newspaper and electronic outlets.
Directs, conducts and arranges tours of the Sheriff’s Office facilities.
Disseminates information when necessary in response to media inquires.
Performs photography work, including color correction, special effects, and slide duplication.
Prepares and conducts presentations to the Commissioners Court, other policy makers and community groups and organizations.
Provides guidance and training on communication skills and techniques, along with effective interpersonal relations to departmental personnel and elected officials.
Provides creative support for internal and external communication efforts including print publications, web sites, electronic communication, community engagement, media and video productions.
Prepare news releases, speeches, information articles, newsletters and legislative testimony and disseminates such information trough the use of the internet and applicable outlets.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Public Administration, Marketing or related field.
Three (3) years of experience.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration:
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required in both English and Spanish.
Ability to enunciate and articulate well enough to speak to groups of people.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and officials, law enforcement agencies, the media, and the general public.
Knowledge of multimedia processes, editing, and production; of audiovisual equipment; of editing, recording, computer graphics, and animation.
Skill in the use of production, recording, and audiovisual equipment; and in the use of a computer and applicable software.
Ability to operate audiovisual equipment.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $64,352.00 per year
