The Healing Arts Therapist/Recreation Therapist for Zinnia Health is a full-time clinician with full responsibility for provision of complex recreation therapy services requiring advanced clinical skills managing creative arts therapists (art therapist, music therapist, dance/movement therapists or drama therapists) and recreation therapists.


Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


The incumbent is a member of the senior leadership team providing advice for recreation and creative arts therapy integrated care programs for a diverse Veteran population with multiple diagnoses, complexities, and other needs. The Healing Arts/Recreation Therapist provides leadership with objective independent assessments and recommendations for policy, operational and administrative issues, and initiatives requiring decision and action; work is technically authoritative. He/she defines the mission and vision of the Service, develops the scope of practice for all recreation and creative arts therapy staff, designing a Recreation Therapy Service treatment plan and assuring implementation of effective, evidenced based clinical services, quality improvement and outcomes measures. The incumbent is responsible for developing, planning, clarifying, administering, and managing Recreation therapy and creative arts services for all areas of the facility. He/she designates priorities and objectives, ensures the clinical and administrative supervision and evaluation.

  • Responsible for strategic planning, management, and operation of an effective and progressive Recreation Therapy Service for the facility. Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan to drive positive outcome data based upon performance indicators.
  • Full responsibility for clinical management, program management, human resources management, strategic planning, and fiscal material, supply, and equipment management to include the development, acquisition, allocation, and utilization of space.
  • Provides administrative and/or clinical supervision of recreation therapy staff in their professional role and overall responsibility for clinical practice for the provision of complex recreation therapy services requiring advanced practice skills ensuring the provision of recreation therapy services in a variety of inpatient and outpatient program areas and clinics.
  • Defines Service mission and vision, developing the scope of practice for all recreation therapy staff, designing a Recreation Therapy Service Plan of Care and establishes recreation therapy objectives to meet those needs which are consistent with medical center goals.
  • Assures implementation of quality improvement measures, technical program development, management and evaluation that includes assessing mission, goals, programs and problems of the medical facility in terms of psychosocial and functional needs of patients are met.
  • Exercises authority in making independent, sound professional advice, decisions, and recommendations of recreation therapy services across the continuum of care for all areas across the medical center. Provider's expertise regarding staff's specialty area in planning for delivery of recreation therapy to patients.
  • Collaborates with strategic planning committees locally, VISN, or with VACO regarding new endeavor opportunities, programs, projects, and assignments such as assistive technology, adaptive sports, data management, outpatient standard episode of care (SEOC) behavior and dementia care workgroups addressing patient care delivery systems, management, and/or Systems Re-design.
  • Provides leadership with objective independent assessments and recommendations for policy, operational and administrative issues, and initiatives requiring decision and action; as a member of the leadership team responsible for advising executive leadership of specific clinical or administrative issues within Recreation Therapy Service and within VASNHCS.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. May be required to work weekends and holidays as needed.
