Job description
The GIS Technician performs technical skills to produce maps, drawings, and charts necessary for locating and mapping land parcels for Arapahoe County’s Assessor’s office.
Note:Our anticipated hiring range is $20.76/hour to $25.95/hour, depending on qualifications and experience
- Prepares land parcel maps accurately representing all land parcels, roads, subdivision, and survey reference points. Uses technical drafting (manual and automated) equipment and techniques to enter boundaries on maps. Researches previous maps, legal descriptions, and subdivision plats while accurately interpreting bearings, angles, distances, and coordinates.
- Prepares maps, visual display materials, graphics, and forms. Transfers data to reproducible and non-reproducible maps using drafting techniques. Researches previous maps and legal descriptions to present accurate data on maps.
- Interfaces with the Engineering department to ensure consistency between the two department’s maps.
- Assists the public in obtaining information pertaining to the location and description of land parcels and ownership of land parcels.
Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Knowledge of technical maps and drafting techniques and procedures; knowledge of land survey procedures, survey field notes, and legal descriptions with knowledge of application to the preparation of maps and compilation of data.
- Knowledge in the use of technical drafting equipment; skill in preparing maps accurately and to scale; skill in the use of visual aids and graphic arts equipment and supplies.
- Ability to comprehend and use legal descriptions in the preparation of maps and the compilation of data; ability to perform complex data computations using trigonometry, geometry, and mathematics.
- Ability to use personal computer software and the related applications to solving municipal problems.

Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED.
- 1+ year experience in manual or automated mapping and/or drafting.
- Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Advanced education in technical drawing or drafting.
- Experience working in Assessors Office.
Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:
- Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
- Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Spends 90% of the time sitting and 10% of the time either standing or walking.
- Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 20 lbs.
- Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs.
- Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
- Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions.
- Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment.
- Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment.
