Position: Food Services Manager
Position Summary:
The position will be responsible for providing oversight and technical assistance to the Cafeteria Managers and staff at all schools within the division of Middlesex County Public Schools. The position will also support staff in following all state and federal regulations that govern school nutrition programs as well as the Virginia Department of Health regulations. Other duties will include inventory control and management as well as transferring food and equipment from a centralized location to the Cafeteria’s kitchens division wide.

Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Essential Functions:
- Oversees assigned food services staff and monitors cafeteria operations for food quality, safety, sanitation, cash and meal accountability, inventory, and production controls
- Implements employee technical assistance (e.g., sanitation, production, staff development, cashier training, state and federal reporting)
- Assists with planning and attending meetings
- Assists with implementing, supervising, monitoring, and promoting all state-sponsored nutrition programs
- Work is performed primarily in the field at school cafeteria sites and a centralized location
- Work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds as well as transporting
- food items to cafeteria sites from a centralized location
- Work involves driving to school cafeteria sites and occasionally involves using food service equipment
- Excellent oral and written communication skill
- Conducts reviews and audits of cafeterias to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
- Performs other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of food services quality control policies and procedures
- Knowledge of child nutrition programs
- Knowledge of commercial food service equipment
- Knowledge of the basic principles of inventory control and management
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of databases, internet, word documents, spreadsheets and related applications
- Skill and ability to maintain accurate records (e.g., data for federal and state reimbursement claims for the school meals program)
- Skill in supervising employees
- Ability to organize, plan, and execute work with minimal supervision
- Ability to operate a personal computer and related software
- Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
- Ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, District policies and building and department procedures.
- Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
- Ability to stay current with district policy, standards and training in the areas of data quality, data privacy, and cybersecurity with respect to student and staff data, and related information systems.
Special Requirements:
- Criminal background check required for hire.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
- Certified Food Service Manager or the ability to become certified within 6 months of employment
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role in school nutrition
- Other combination of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered
Physical Requirements:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking and occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
