FLEET TECHNICIAN III - GENERATOR
FULL TIME REGULAR

Pay Rate (PG-P17) $21.75-$32.51

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of diesel/propane/gas engine powered generators from 5kw up to 1750 kw. Must be able to trouble shoot, disassemble, repair and reassemble system components of all sizes and types on the units listed above. Perform reliability/preventive maintenance checks including starting, functioning of transfer switches and related equipment for the proper operation of generators. Change batteries, block heaters, etc. as required.
Performs emergency call outs beyond regular business hours as required. Completes and maintains repair orders, parts requisitions, time sheets and other records as required. Keep generator units clean and orderly as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of generator power equipment. Knowledge of safe work practices in dealing with high voltages associated with the prevention of injuries caused from inattention to occupational hazards of the trade. Knowledge of electrical systems (including interpreting schematic diagrams) and internal combustion engines as used in generator equipment.
Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the equipment referenced above. Ability to read and understand repair manuals, diagrams, drawings, parts lists/diagrams and computer reports. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform mathematical tasks. Ability to research, investigate, experiment, detect, inspect, verify, recognize, and recommend solutions. Ability to think rationally, react calmly and responsively in stressful or emergency situations.
Ability to perform physically difficult tasks. The ability to work on equipment overhead causing much of the manual work performed with raised arms and hands above the head for extended periods of time. The ability to operate hand tools and torque wrenches requiring in excess of 100 pounds of lateral pressure applied to the tool. The ability to work in confined spaces such as pit areas, engine compartments and underneath vehicles requiring significant bending and/or stooping to access critical areas of the equipment being repaired. Ability to perform duties on a variety of floor surfaces, both flat and variable.
The ability to work with and around various chemicals such as diesel fuel, gasoline, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, cleaning solvents, anti-freeze and other substances common to the automotive repair trade.
Ability to see. Ability to ambulate independently, drive and operate unassisted, automotive and heavy equipment as described above. Ability to bend, stoop, sit, crouch, crawl, climb and stand. Ability to lift and hold parts and components in excess of sixty-five (65) pounds. Ability and agility to perform various tasks in all weather conditions.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an equivalency diploma and have a minimum of five (5) years of experience repairing equipment of the types noted above which included three (3) years as a Journeyman Mechanic.
A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment and be able to secure a Florida Class B CDL driver’s license within six (6) months of employment as required by state statute and Florida Senate Bill 658.
Must provide customary hand tools, common to the automotive and mechanical trade.
SPECIAL PREFERENCE
Prefer that applicants be ASE certified or possess related certifications.
This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
