A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

Primary Function:

AIS places certified biologists (observers) onboard commercial fishing vessels operating in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska. The information collected by the observers provides the best scientific information to manage the Alaskan groundfish and halibut fisheries, and to develop measures to minimize bycatch. The Field Coordinator will provide direction and logistical support to the observers.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The FC’s schedule will be full-time Friday through Monday.
  • Manage and provide support to between 5 – 45 Certified North Pacific Fisheries Observers depending on season
  • Coordinate complicated travel logistics and lodging arrangements in remote and isolated locations within Alaska
  • Complete assigned sea days and collect biological data and fishery-dependent research aboard commercial fishing vessels in Alaska as needed
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vessel representatives, processing plant personnel, vendors, governmental agencies, and other key industry stakeholders
  • Ensure data quality and performance standards meet program objectives
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to deployed observers and compose observer performance evaluations
  • Assist observer recruitment effort, screen candidates, conduct interviews, and direct AIS trainings
  • Maintain records of fishing and observer effort, tracking fishing industry trends, create projections of fishing effort and observer needs
  • Representing A.I.S., Inc. at meetings and conferences related to fisheries
  • Support NMFS’s online trip management system and document all industry communication

Compensation: Candidates will be paid a salary to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on employee’s experience. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • An understating of commercial fisheries management principles and practices
  • Experience managing field staff
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency with MS Excel and Word
  • Ability to work independently, as well as, on a team
  • Have strong organizational and communication skills
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, and able to work on short notice
  • Good interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a NMFS Certified Fisheries Observer
  • Working knowledge of Alaskan Groundfish fisheries and regulations
  • Experience managing large field sampling programs with a geographically dispersed work force

Travel:

  • Travel up to 15% of the time may be required. Travel would include visiting ports or deploying offshore.
