The Executive Director of Behavioral Health Services offers a unique leadership opportunity for program development and operational oversight of a broad array of hospital and ambulatory based behavioral health (BH) services, in a region with significant BH burden and associated SDOH barriers. This is an opportunity to drive progress towards health equity during an unprecedented time in public health . Psychiatry is also involved in broader population health discussions including collaborations with community partners, with attention to the ACO population, and BH quality metrics.

- Hospital
- Expanded Behavioral Health(BH) workforce, with MD, PMHNP and PA clinicians to ensure active management of a range of BH conditions in a consult-liaison (CL) service
- Developed a novel team-based CL service inclusive of dedicated BH nursing and community health workers (CHW), to support collaboration with medical/nursing staff, social services and engagement with community aftercare.
- Invested in expanding and implementing Behavioral Health services in Southcoast Health’s 3 Emergency Departments.
- Ambulatory
- Expanding Integrated BH services following a pilot BH integration of PMHNP and LICSW across several adult medicine sites.
- Psychiatry is working with new Physician-in-Chief for Primary Care and Chief Transformation and Innovation Officer in the formation of a full BH integrated program across Southcoast’s primary care sites, inclusive of BH clinicians (LICSW; LMHC) and CHW, alongside access to MD/APP psychiatric consultation and digital self help/psychoeducation.
- Psychiatry is actively supporting integration of BH clinicians into Southcoast Health specialty care as well, with a posting for integrated BH clinician in Neurology, psychiatric consultation for a multidisciplinary COPD service and consideration of similar integrated BH services in an expanding OBGYN department.
Position reports to the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, and in collaboration with the Chair of Psychiatry. The Executive Director – Behavioral Health Services will be the administrative leader for all Behavioral Health (BH) strategic planning, operations, financial performance, programming and business development working in conjunction with Southcoast Hospitals Group, Southcoast Providers Group (SPG) and Southcoast Health Network (SHN/ACO) to ensure BH services are high quality and well-coordinated for patients across the Southcoast continuum, and are financially viable with a focus on operational and service excellence.
Perform diversified duties to support day-to-day operations of BH focused programs and practices consistent with the strategic vision of the organization.
- Responsible for the operations and administrative support areas for departmental staff in hospital and in ambulatory settings across the health system.
- Collaborate with members of leadership, at various levels, to ensure coordination of BH service delivery, information technology, financial, strategic, talent management, quality and regulatory compliance.
- Provide leadership and direction of assigned personnel including scheduling and ongoing monitoring of productivity and quality of work.
- Responsible for staff competency and adherence to policies and procedures. Work collaboratively with designated service line leadership.
- Duties involve direct supervisory responsibility as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Business Administration or Health Services Administration or Clinical Profession or equivalent knowledge and experience/education is required. MBA or MHA preferred.
- Ability to perform as a proficient communicator (orally or in writing) is required.
- Excellent financial management skills are required.
- Ability to develop positive relationships and the ability to represent Southcoast to internal and external audiences is requited.
- Minimum of 5 to 10 years of progressive service line leadership experience plus additional healthcare specific experience is required in Behavioral Health.
Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal Influenza and the COVID 19 virus and provide required vaccination documentation unless approved for an exemption or deferral by Southcoast prior to starting employment.
